Fillies falter in final regular-season matches

The Fillies battled two tough teams Tuesday, Oct. 24 at the Sandy Creek hosted triangular with Bruning-Davenport/Shickley. 

In the first match against BDS, Sutton took the loss in two sets, 25-14 and 25-9. 

"BDS has a solid program and is having a very good year," Head Coach Shelli Mohnike said. "We were able to play them tough early on. A couple of good servers hurt us late in the game." 

Senior Alyssa Schurman scored four of the team's 10 kills in the match, taking 18 swings and only accounting for two errors. Freshman Dayvie Perrien dished out eight of the team's 10 set assists. Sophomore Lydia Rogers and junior Lacey Freking handed out the other two. 

Perrien earned the only two ace serves in the match. Freshman Kylie Baumert assisted on two blocks, with help from Freking on one and Perrien on the other. 

Junior Natalie Dunn tallied 10 of the team's 18 digs. 

In the second and final match of the night, against Sandy Creek, Sutton played tough, but lost in two sets 25-20 and 25-12. 

"Sandy Creek has a lot of good players," Mohnike said. "Our girls had a lot of fun in that match. We were able to battle with them pretty good, especially in set one." 

Schurman was all over the place, earning seven kills on 19 swings with only three errors; marking one ace serve, one block, and six digs.  

Senior Melanie Schutte followed Schurman with five kills, on 16 swings and five errors. Perrien handed out the teamís 14 set assists. 

Schurman and Freking each tallied one ace serve for the teamís two total. Schurman and Baumert combined for the teamís one block of the match. 

Junior Maddie Nuss dug up nine of the team's 26 balls. 

The triangular was the final regular-season games for the Fillies; sub-district play will begin Monday, Oct. 30 at Grand Island Central Catholic. The sub-district pairings will be announced Thursday, Oct. 26.
