Sutton concluded the 2017 volleyball season at the C2-7 sub-districts in the play-in game against Hastings St. Cecilia.

The Bluehawks earned the win in three sets, 25-17, 25-18 and 25-7, respectively.

Three seniors played in their final game at the Grand Island Central Catholic gym against St. Cecilia: Alyssa Schurman, Melanie Schutte and Emily Van Lynden.

In the final game, Schutte led in kills with nine of the team's 16, and she led the team with 105 this season.

"Melanie Schutte was a constant presence in the front row for us," first-year Head Coach Shelli Mohnike said. "She finished the season leading the team in kills. She broke 100 in our last match. We asked a lot of her by playing multiple positions this season and in different capacities. She was able to adapt and still stay focused."

Schurman led the team in ace serves in the last match with two and led the team with 23 this season. She dug up four balls against the Bluehawks, which contributed to her 245 this season to lead the team.

"Alyssa Schurman is a fantastic athlete," Mohnike said. "She has a very good work ethic and amazes me at what she can accomplish. She was definitely a solid force on our team, especially in serve receive and dominating middle back defense."

Van Lynden was a foreign exchange student and contributed to the reserves team.

"Emily Van Lynden was such a joy to have on our team this year," Mohnike said. "Emily is our exchange student from the Netherlands, living with the Jim Jones family. She is very athletic and fast. It was fun watching her accomplish new things throughout the season."

In the final match, Schutte led the team with nine kills and freshman Kylie Baumert and junior Logan Majors followed with three each. Schurman also contributed one.

Junior Megan Fehr dished out nine assists and freshman Dayvie Perrien handed out the other seven.

Junior Lacey Freking and Perrien scored one ace each in the match to follow Schurman's two.

Sophomore Lydia Rogers sent back four hits, contributing four assisted blocks. Baumert assisted on three, and Majors on two.

Fehr led the team with five digs to lead the team toward 17.

Overall this season, the Fillies finished 2-26.

"I am very proud of the girls and how hard they worked this season," Mohnike said. "I asked a lot of them physically and mentally."
