Butch Hassler, of rural Sutton, is no stranger to the military or 4-H way of life, and due to his involvement in both, was honored with a Quilt of Valor at the Nebraska State Fair Monday, Sept. 3.

His father joined the Navy first, then careered out in the Air Force, resulting in both Hassler and his brother, David, growing up as “military brats,” moving frequently.

Hassler served in the Air Force in 1977, serving his enlistment stateside, mostly at Hill Air Force Base in Ogden, UT, as a crew chief on the Air Force F4 fighter jets.

Along with his brother being enlisted in the Navy, Hassler also has a niece serving in the Coast Guard.
