Dec. 1, 1933 - Oct. 3, 2018

Carolyn Ruth Messerli, 84, of Edgar, NE, passed away Oct. 3, 2018. The daughter of Donald and Phyllis (Wight) Jensen, was born Dec. 1, 1933 in her grandparents’ home at Weston, IA. In 1946, her childhood home in Missouri was destroyed by a tornado. After losing everything, their family moved back to Iowa. She attended Hazel Dell No. 6 Country School and Underwood Consolidated High School where she met the love of her life, Robert (Bob) Messerli. Bob and Carolyn were married on Feb. 8, 1952. She then worked at Council Bluffs Savings Bank. Bob was drafted into the Army and Carolyn traveled to Kansas, then to Germany to be with him. They lived in Germany for about seven months, then Carolyn traveled by ship back to the United States. Their first home was in Council Bluffs, IA, where Paula, Peggy and Timothy were born. They lived in Underwood, IA, for several years. The next move was to Staplehurst, NE, then to Edgar in 1962. Their family grew as Tad, Ty, and Trudy were born. Carolyn stayed home as a “Domestic Engineer,” raising the children. Her family was her world and she took good care of them. All of her kids and grandkids remember her well known phrase of, “Have fun, but be good,” as you were going out the door. Carolyn liked sewing, flowers, birds, butterflies and beautiful sunsets. Survivors include her husband, Bob Messerli of Edgar, her sister, Donna Sherbondy of Colorado Springs, CO; and her children, Paula (Craig) Johnson of Independence, MO; Peggy (Roger) Rumsey of Oak; Tim Messerli of Edgar; Tad Messerli of Edgar; Ty Messerli of Westminster, CO; Trudy (Jon) Kamler of San Antonio, TX. She is also survived by her 17 grandchildren: Andrew (Holly) Johnson, Samuel (Kathy) Johnson, Joseph (Caylee) Johnson, Anna (Chanler) Sechrest, Isaiah Johnson, Amos Johnson, Emily (Damon) Applegate, Kelsey (Anthony) Osborn, Andrea (Curt) Gosser and Josie Kamler; her 10 great-grandchildren: Charli, Kalli, Samuel, Kaiden, Carter, Norah, Chloe, Everett, Emmett and Odin; and nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends! Carolyn was preceded in death by her parents and brother-in- law. Funeral services were Saturday, Oct. 6, at the Williams Funeral Home Chapel in Edgar, with Pastor Eldon Shetler officiating. Burial was held in the Edgar Cemetery, Edgar. Condolences may be sent to the family at wmsfh.com.
