Mustangs end 2018 season at 10-2

BY TORY DUNCAN

The bitter cold temperatures during Friday nights C-2 semifinal playoff bout between the Sutton Mustangs and Norfolk Catholic Knights did very little to slow down the potent 1-2 running back punch from the Knights, as Norfolk Catholic bulled their way into the Nov. 20 Class C-2 state championship game with Centennial, earning a 50-28 win over the host Mustangs.

The “feels like” temperature flirted with the lower single digits, but despite the bone chilling cold, senior all-state running back Dylan Kautz, along with running mates, senior Evan Smith punished the Mustangs for 387 combined rushing yards, which accounted for all but one rushing yard for the Knights.

Kautz ran 31 times for 232 yards, while Smith carried 16 times for 155 yards. In contrast, Sutton’s Brett Simonsen gained 120 yards on 15 carries, leaving the Sutton senior with 1,845 rushing yards on the season, an average of 153.5 yards per game. Kautz would break a scoreless tie late in the first quarter, as the 5-9 180-pound speedster grabbed a 19-yard screen pass from quarterback Cayden Cunningham to set the Knights up with a 7-0 lead at the 3:33 mark of the opening stanza.
