FAIRMONT—On Oct. 23, the Flint Hills Resources Fairmont ethanol plant hosted representatives from the U.S. Grains Council, the Nebraska Corn Board, the Nebraska Ethanol Board, the Nebraska Department of Agriculture and a delegation of feed ingredients buyers from Taiwan. The Taiwanese buyers were in the United States as part of a fact-finding tour to learn about animal food products made by ethanol plants.

While ethanol plants produce dried distillers’ grains as a co-product in the production of ethanol, the Taiwanese group chose to tour Flint Hills’ Fairmont plant in part because the facility also produces NexPro®, a high-protein animal food ingredient that is especially useful in the production of poultry, fish, shrimp and pet food.

NexPro® is made through a proprietary process that separates protein from the whole stillage that remains after the production of ethanol. The Fairmont plant has been producing NexPro® since 2018.

According to the US Department of Agriculture, global demand for animal protein will continue to grow over the next two decades, driven by world population growth and increases in global standards of living. Taiwanese and other foreign producers of animal protein are seeking alternative high-protein food ingredients to make their operations more efficient.

“Our company believes that NexPro can help fill a global market need for high-quality, cost-effective food additives,” said Mark Murphy, Flint Hills’ general manager of ingredients. “Presently we sell NexPro made in Fairmont both domestically and internationally, and our customers like the quality and value of the product in comparison to other high-protein food ingredients.”

To better meet customer needs and growing demand, Flint Hills is investing to double its NexProT® production capacity. Construction at the company’s Shell Rock, Iowa, plant is currently underway, with plans to begin NexPro® production operations in 2020. Shell Rock will be the second of Flint Hills’ seven ethanol plants to produce NexProTM.

“We have an opportunity to create another valuable product at our ethanol plants, and that’s good not only for us, but also for our NexPro customers and for area farmers who supply us with corn,” said Murphy.
