Letting you know about an amazing book

Letting you know about an amazing book

On Saturday I spent about seven hours reading—something I haven’t done in a while...probably even years, to be honest.

I picked up Holly Jackson’s “A good girl’s guide to murder” recently and it was amazing. I’ve added it to my list of favorite books, because I thought it was incredible.

This book is one of those books where it’s difficult to put down once you get started. Many of the chapters ended with a cliffhanger, or ended making you want more information.

A quick synopsis: Pippa (often called Pip throughout the book) is in her senior year of high school and decides to complete her capstone project on a murder that happened five years prior. This murder was quickly determined a closed case.

An unreal experience...at least for me

An unreal experience...at least for me
An unreal experience...at least for me

Bucket list items, they come and they go, but sometimes, just sometimes those items that we’ve all had on our bucket list, that have gone away—in many ways forgotten about—come out of the blue. The past week and a half has brought one of those bucket list items back from my days growing up in the Shelton and Gibbon area.

Each year during the spring migration of waterfowl and certainly the Sandhill Cranes, I always wanted to see a Whooping Crane live and in person, but to no avail. For 56 and a half years of life, I had forgotten that the sight of a Whooper came and went each year with the crane migration.

Welp, this year it happened. As you saw in the CCN last week, I witnessed this rare and endangered species with my own eyes. Not just one bird, but THREE!

Lightly roasting Tory

Lightly roasting Tory

More often than I’d like to admit, when Tuesday’s come around my brain is plum dry of ideas for a column.

When this happens I typically find myself standing in the doorway of Tory’s office, asking him if he has any column ideas I could write from, and on most weeks the answer he gives me is a shaking of his head followed by a “I’ve got nothing.”

This week was no different as I walked the five steps to the doorway between our offices and asked the age-old question of, “have any column ideas I could use?”

The need for a regulation rewind

Article Image Alt Text

Smith

In response to both burdensome and unnecessary regulations coming from the Biden White House.

I am launching a Regulation Rewind initiative. President Biden has not held office for 100 days yet and we are already experiencing his bureaucratic overreach. Because we know we can expect more Executive Orders from this administration, my initiative will be an ongoing project to call attention to harmful regulations and stand against them on behalf of the Third District.

Pending issues portend major cultural shift in Nebraska

Article Image Alt Text

Schmidt

In four decades of covering government and politics in this state, I never thought I’d see the major cultural shift we are facing right now. At least not in my lifetime.

Casino gaming and legalized marijuana measures are before Nebraska lawmakers right now. The casino matter came from the will of the voters. Medical marijuana has been discussed before and almost came to a public vote in November thanks to a massive petition drive. But the state Supreme Court said the petition covered too many topics and kept it from the ballot. If it passes legislative muster, a recreational marijuana measure could face voters in November 2022.

Spring has finally sprung

Spring has finally sprung

Saturday was the first official day of spring and other than the wind, it was a beautiful day.

Over the weekend I spent time down south for a wedding, and on my way home, since most of the gravel roads were dry and the beautiful weather was still around, I took the long way home.

Windows rolled partially down, the wind flowing through the car, and music coming out of the speakers was a great way to drive as I headed north.

Then, at about the halfway point, I was just getting onto a new gravel road when I felt pressure in my sinuses. Then I realized what was happening...

Federal level postal service is concerning

Federal level postal service is concerning

Challenges face us all each and every day, some of those challenges are self-inflicted, and yet others are out of our control. We just have learned along the way that with challenging times comes the will to make things work no matter what we face in our daily lives.

As I pen this week’s Bull column I lash out at our postal service, but before I dig in, I will clarify. In no way, shape or form am I upset with our local postal employees, as a matter of fact, those that work in our post offices in Clay County do a fantastic job of getting our mail and packages delivered in as timely of a manner as they possibly can, especially considering what they are all up against.

The memories chatting can bring

The memories chatting can bring

Have you ever had an evening with friends and/or family when all the chatting you do brings up memories you’ve either forgotten about or simply haven’t thought of in a while?

For me, this happens mostly when talking with my cousins. I mean, they were my childhood and growing up with them we made quite a few memories.

However, sometimes memories come up when I’m talking with friends, and they tend to be the most random memories coming to mind from the topics we’re chatting about.

For example, I was talking with a friend recently about how cool I think spiders and snakes are (seriously—black widows, brown recluse, and daddy long legs are my top three favorites).

A trip along the ole river road and more

A trip along the ole river road and more
A trip along the ole river road and more

Saturday’s weather prompted me to jump in the Jeep and take a meandering tour of the country this past weekend. A trip that originally I thought might take a couple hours soon turned into a near 300-mile, seven-hour drive along many roads that I hadn’t driven since my growing-up days in Central Nebraska.

It had been several years since I had driven what we always called the river road between the Interstate 80 Wood River exit and Highway 10, just north of the Minden exit off of Interstate 80.

The reason? To view the start of the spring migration of the Sandhill Cranes.

Sutton: 150 years of growing history

Sutton: 150 years of growing history
Sutton: 150 years of growing history

Sesquicentennial...It’s a word that takes a little work to have it roll off the tongue when you try to say it, but this year, that word has a great deal of meaning to the community of Sutton, as the community prepares to celebrate it’s own sesquicentennial this year.

As a matter of fact, according to historical facts, a week from this Sunday marks the official start of Sutton’s 150th year as a town. Settled first by Luther French, who homesteaded the area after leaving Painesville Geauga County, Ohio and headed west, landing on what is the original site of what was officially called Sutton on Aug. 12, 1871.

French, however, first set foot in what became Sutton on March 14, 1870, and after doing some light research at this point, it sounds as if Sutton became quite the lively town over the early years of settlement. His home, a dugout of course, was
