Soaking in festival season in Clay Co.

By Tory Duncan

Idon’t know for sure, but after this past weekend’s Dugout Days and EdgarFest celebrations, I’m not sure if it could get much better regarding the weather, or the slate of activities in both communities, but I do know this...It’s the traditional kick-off, if you will, for the summer activity and celebration season.

Sutton’s two and a half day run, along with Edgar’s day long slate of fun in the sun on Saturday, really started the community celebration season with a bang. Edgar’s fireworks display capped a full day of events that brought great fun for all, while Sutton’s main day of action, Saturday, was capped off with perhaps the biggest and best parade of the nine years I’ve lived in Clay County.

Busy weekened means fun for all

By Ashley Swanson

Busy doesn’t even begin to describe this past weekend, but it sure was fun. With Dugout Days and EdgarFest filling up the weekend, there was no reason for anyone to be bored.

Dugout Days festivities started Thursday evening with the Chloe Burns Benefit. Friday kicked-off with the swimming activities, followed by the annual fishing contest.

Wedding adventures in southern Nebraska

By:Ashley Swanson

This past weekend, it seemed like a lot was going on. There were weddings in town, birthday parties, and, of course, garage sales up the ying-yang.

However, on Saturday, my cousin, Hannah, and I went out of county for a different wedding near Lawrence.

Learning from the passion of giving

By: Tory Duncan

Monday afternoon, something just truly clicked with in my mind, my heart and my soul!

I had the luxury of going out to watch, observe and soak in some great people giving back to perhaps some of the most amazing people that reside at the Sutton Community Home.

Sandhills retreat is always welcome

By Tory Duncan

Nebraska’s Sandhills region has always been an ultimate favorite of mine since I was a youngster, so many years ago that I refuse to count.

This past week I had the luxury of “getting lost” in the hills for a few days.

In all, during my four day tour of Western Nebraska, I passed through some 50 towns of all sizes, from Mason City, Berwyn, Dunning to Mullen. From Hyannis to Arthur, Keystone to Roscoe and Ogallala. From Paxton to Sutherland and Wallace, along with Hayes Center to Culbertson, McCook and Indianola, Atlanta and Funk, you name it. My almost 1,000-mile trip over the last four days of the week, was truly a getway, along the untraveled roads of the Nebraska Sandhills and Southwest Nebraska.

Letting the paint wars commence

By Ashley Swanson

Have you ever had a paint war? If you haven’t, then it’s probably something you should add to the list of awesome things to do in your lifetime. If you have, then you already know about the awesomeness I’m talking about.

A paint war is exactly how it sounds—you have a war, but with paint. Jenna had never experienced a paint war, so we traveled the whole six blocks to DG and picked up 12 tiny things of paint. We had every color from red to purple, and sparkly blue and green.

Paint can be difficult to pick up, so you have to choose a good designated war zone. We chose out in the country on a gravel road, which didn’t affect any lawn, plant or crop...or sidewalk, for that matter.

Effective government to grow Nebraska

You’ll often hear me say that the vision for my administration is to grow Nebraska. While private sector job creators are the economic engine of Nebraska, state government helps provide the framework and infrastructure that can either support or hinder growth.

Over the past two years, my team has worked to make state government more effective, more efficient and more customer-focused to help grow Nebraska. Whether it’s launching our first-in-the-nation reemployment program, or putting more services online, our team is making state government work for the taxpayers of Nebraska.

Our first-in-the-nation reemployment program has been producing real results in the year and a half since it’s been launched.

A look back at the 2017 legislative session

At the conclusion of the recent legislative session a reporter asked senators to describe the session in a single word. I chose “misinformed”. The Legislature addressed a number of extremely complex policy topics, including a major tax reform package, developing a new budget in light of slowed revenue growth, several programs that made changes to existing property tax authorities and deductions, as well as education issues. A shocking amount of misinformation was disseminated to voters through email, social media and even inaccurate content in some mainstream media.

Continuing the fight against cancer

By Ashley Swanson

My first bout with cancer, when I really understood what the disease entailed, was when my Grandma Jan was diagnosed with bone cancer.

I don’t remember when she was diagnosed, I just remember the disease took hold of her and she went downhill very quickly. In earlier years, she had been diagnosed with breast cancer and eventually had a mastectomy.

Memorial Day/Weekend amazements

By Tory Duncan

Each year with our annual race around the county to cover Memorial Day services, I always pick up some pretty lasting and heartfelt impressions...this year was no different.

Thanks to the help of Ashley, Melissa and Jenna Nuss, we were all able to soak in a little bit more of the county services, with each of us taking two services to cover, thus enabling us to capture more moments at each service.
