Harvard’s annual car show, which features a number of activities, a well-entered parade, and several cars, wasn’t always as it is today.

Fourteen years ago, the car show was the only part of the community event.

In 2006, during the dedication of the Veteran’s Memorial Wall in Harvard, Gayle Shore suggested hosting a car show, to which he, and soon after Kenny Reutzel, were eventually put in charge of.

The funds of the annual car show go toward the memorial wall each year.

After talking with some people on how to run a car show, the duo started in and hosted the first-ever Harvard Veteran’s Memorial Car Show.

Brian C. Buescher, a 1993 graduate of Sandy Creek High School and a native of Deweese, has been tabbed as the next U.S. District Court Judge for the District of Nebraska.

In early October 2018, Nebraska Senators Deb Fischer and Ben Sasse recommended Buescher to President Donald Trump to fill the vacancy left when Judge Laurie Smith Camp announced that she would be taking senior status, prompting Fischer and Sasse to launch an application process, in which Buescher was selected and nominated to fill the seat left by Smith Camp.

It was announced on Wednesday, July 24, that Buescher was indeed selected to fill the vacancy by a 51-40 vote in the U.S. Senate.

Sasse noted in a release that “Today is a good day for this body (the Senate), for the State of Nebraska and for every American who is committed to the rule of law, including our first freedom, which is religious liberty.”

To inform the public and combat rumors about the Sutton Community Home, the SCH Foundation hosted Coffee and Conversations Thursday, July 25.

Although nothing is set in stone, preliminary potential phases of the construction were presented; the new facility will include three levels of care, including assisted living, heavy assisted, and memory care.

Parts of the northern brick area of the facility—which serves as office space now—will be removed. The existing assisted living facility will be re-purposed for the memory care unit.

Fourteen proposed one bedroom units will be added at just over 600 sq ft a piece, with an additional pair of two bedroom units constructed at just under 900 sq ft a piece.

The facility will also include an administrative area, as well as a welcome area; private dinning room; and the rooms in the current assisted living will be remodeled and upgraded.

A field day is planned at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln’s South Central Agricultural Laboratory on Aug. 1. The event will be from 8:30 a.m.-4 p.m., at 851 Hwy. 6 near Harvard.

Attendees will be able to choose from multiple field research trials to tour. Topics will focus on improving crop production and profitability. Each year more than 100 applied field research trials are conducted at SCAL by Nebraska faculty and USDA Agricultural Research Service scientists. Trials are focused on irrigation and water management, soil fertility, entomology, weed science, cropping systems and disease management.

The day will begin with registration at 8:30 a.m., followed by tours of research sites through 4 p.m. Lunch and refreshments included. Attendees are asked to preregister by July 29 for planning purposes.
