Heat doesn’t disrupt Dugout Days, EdgarFest fun

Despite reaching triple digits on the thermometer, Dugout Days and EdgarFest carried on Friday through Sunday as in year’s past, with several activities lined up, including street dances, carnival rides, bounce houses, parades ,and fireworks. Here, carnival goers hold on tight as they twist in the air on a ride at the Dugout Days carnival Saturday.

LEFT: Grand marshals of the Dugout Days parade are presented with a plaque from Erin Huber, at left. Cheri Rolfes, center, was the selected grand marshal at the 2018 parade; however, due to a sudden downpour and area storms, the parade was canceled. ‘It’s a Family Tradition’ at the Clay County Fair, July 10-13

Clay County’s annual fair is set for July 10-13, and is backed by the theme “It’s a Family Tradition.”

4-H entries can be entered between 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, July 9, and 8-10 a.m., Wednesday, July 10.

Co. supervisors hire Lewis as emergency manager

Clay County Supervisors approved to hire Tim Lewis for the vacant emergency manager position, following a series of interviews with Lewis and two other candidates.

Lewis, a Nebraska native originally from Holt County, saw the job for a Clay County Emergency Manager while visiting his daughter in Kearney and applied.

Dugout Days, EdgarFest are only days away

This weekend is the weekend many have waited an entire year for. It’s a weekend when Sutton and Edgar’s populations increase as Dugout Days (Sutton) and EdgarFest circle around for another year.

Dugout Days begins Thursday, June 27 and ends Sunday, June 30, while EdgarFest’s events kick off Friday, June 28 and end Saturday, June 29.

DUGOUT DAYS

Dugout Days, themed “Don’t Rain on Our Parade!,” is set for June 27-30, kicking off the annual event with the carnival Thursday, June 27, from 5 p.m.-midnight.

Also on Thursday, Brandy’s Balloons will be at the Sutton American Legion from 6-9 p.m. There will be craft beer tasting and appetizer specials, also at the Legion, starting at 6 p.m.

Erickson receives Quilt of Valor

During her class reunion over Memorial Day weekend, Sutton’s Carol Erickson received a Quilt of Valor from some of her classmates (class of 1966), for her service in the USS Army. Here, Erickson sits in front of the quilt she received. The Quilts of Valor Foundation began in 2003; it’s purpose is “to cover all those service members and veterans wounded physically or psychologically with comforting and healing Quilts of Valor,” QOV Founder Catherin Roberts said.

Wind heavily damages tree in Fairfield

A thunderstorm, accompanied by winds reaching speeds and gusts of 41 mph and 56 mph, respectively, caused an older tree to fall across 7th Street, near C Street, in Fairfield, Thursday, June 20.

Clay Center gears up for 4th of July Celebration

Again this year the Clay Center VFD will put on a firework show at the end of the day July 4.

“All American Summer” has been selected as the theme for Clay Center’s annual Fourth of July Celebration.

Events kick off early, at 7 a.m., Thursday, July 4, with a 10-mile bike race and a 5K/ one-mile run/walk. Races will begin at 7:30 a.m. (bikes) and 8 a.m. (run/walk).

Registration will be in front of the fitness center and will serve as a Pool Buddies fundraiser. Cost is $15 for adults, prior to July 1, and $20 after. Kids 12 and under are free.

From 7:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m., Breakfast on the Go will be served at the Community Room; this will serve as a HART Legacy Fundraiser. Breakfast burritos, cinnamon rolls, and other portable breakfast items will be available.

Co Board interviews EM candidates

Nearly three months since the Clay County Board of Supervisors forced the resignation of then Clay County Emergency Manager Loren Uden, the board has interviewed three candidates for the position.

Tim Lewis of Bottineau County, ND, and Mitchell Naiman of York County interviewed during last week's regular meeting of the County Board on June 11.

Darline Knight of Guadalupe County, TX, interviewed during this week's regular meeting of the County Board June 18, at the courthouse in Clay Center.

Each prospect has experience in emergency management coordination. One candidate is from central Nebraska, while the two outof-state applicants have family ties in the area.

Decal added to courthouse front window

The Clay County Courthouse in Clay Center is sporting a new window above its front doors, thanks to the Clay County Board of Supervisors. Each of the seven Board members opted to split the cost, out of their personal finances, to place the words “In God We Trust” on the window.

Phil de Tooth (William Boehler) and Flossy Dailey (Emma Stump) tie up Dr. Molar (Clark Gibbs), and Nova Caine (Amanda Eastin) after discovering their evil plan during a dress rehearsal June 13. D.K. Molar is set to be performed Saturday, June 22, and Sunday, June 23, at 7 p.m. both nights at the Allegro Wolf Arts Center in Sutton.

Allegro Wolf will present a melodrama this weekend, June 22 and 23, as well as three skits performed by upcoming young actors.

With both days starting at 7 p.m.—with a cash bar and reception hour starting at 6 p.m.—the audience will delve into the world of D.K. Molar, a depraved dentist who steals gold from patient’s teeth and replaces them with fools gold.

However, his new receptionist, Flossy Dailey, begins to notice something amiss within the dentist office, and sets out to find out what and who’s behind it.
