The future of a performing arts center at Sandy Creek Schools may be not be clear, but school board members are willing to explore more options in how to make it happen. The South Central Unified District #5 School Board narrowly passed a motion authorizing a $25,000 feasibility study on the possible construction of the school theater during a special meeting on Nov. 1, at Sandy Creek Elementary.

Clay Center broke ground Oct. 16 for a future clinic, which will replace the current facility sitting on the corner of Glenvil Street and Fryar Avenue. The clinic is owned by Memorial Community Health, based in Aurora; the new clinic will be constructed by Chief Construction. During the groundbreaking ceremony, MCH CEO Diane Keller said, “We’re excited to begin a new era of operations in Clay Center. We hope to have the opportunity to grow and continue with service to the community.”

Mark Boggess is forever a farm kid at heart. A native of rural Villisca, IA, located about an hour east of Nebraska City, he grew up showing pigs, cattle, and sheep at the county fair. He has the State 4-H Sheep Award to prove it, along with ample showmanship honors, readily recalling the year he won the rosette in all three species. Graduating high school, Boggess attended Iowa State University and came back home in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in animal science.

Eighteen people spoke in favor of Initiative 427, eight in opposition, and one as neutral, during the Oct. 30 Medicaid expansion meeting in Grand Island.

Many of those adding to the public record repeated the arguments made in the opening remarks, but a few testimonies stood out:

For: “She doesn’t have insurance, because she can’t afford insurance at all”

Proponents Robin Vodehnal identified her sister as one of the potential beneficiaries of the Medicaid expansion. She described how her sister’s $800 monthly income is not enough to allow her to qualify for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act.

Medicaid expansion supporters and opponents gathered in Grand Island Tuesday during the final of three public hearings before voters decide the fate of Initiative 427 on election day.

Nebraska’s Secretary of State John Gale called the Oct. 30 meeting impressive.

“The testimony has been superb on both sides,” he said. “It has been a terrific public record.”
