Area first responders participate in MCI training

Members of Glenvil, Edgar, Clay Center and Sutton’s first responder teams were part of a group of about 60 first responders who participated in a Multi-Casuality Incident Training (MCI) Saturday at Central Community College in Hastings.

An MCI is where there are more patients than responders to treat individuals. The exercise was a realistic traffic accident that emergency crews could respond to.

Pursuit in Colorado Amber Alert case begins in Sutton

46-year-old mother apprehended east of Friend June 7

A Colorado woman led the Nebraska State Patrol on what turned out to be a near 30-mile high speed pursuit along Highway 6, running through Clay and Fillmore Counties before officers of the Friend Police Department used a tire deflation device to slow down the vehicle, allowing the state patrol to apprehend 46-year-old Donetta Phipps of the Thorton,  CO, area. Thorton is a suburb of Denver, located in the northeast area of the Denver Metropolitan area.

Trail, Boswell charged with death of Loofe

On Tuesday, June 12, Aubrey C. Trail, 51, and Bailey M. Boswell, 24, were charged in Saline County Court with First Degree Murder (Class I or Class IA Felony) and Improper Disposal of Human Skeletal Remains (Class IV Felony) in the death of 24-year-old Sydney Loofe.

Court records released by authorities Tuesday morning stated that on or about Nov. 15 and/or Nov. 16, 2017, Trail strangled Loofe to death with an extension cord. An autopsy performed on Dec. 7, 2017, showed “the cause of death is homicidal violence including strangulation.” With the help of Boswell, he then dismembered Loofe’s body and disposed of her in rural Clay County.

Grafton Mini Mart robber still on the loose

The man responsible for robbing the Grafton Mini Mart, on Thursday, June 7 is still at large, as of Friday late morning according to Fillmore County Sheriff William Burgess.

The unidentified man is described as possibly Hispanic, with black hair and a mustache, wearing a hat, dark T-shirt, and shorts with a wallet chain hanging. He also has a tattoo on his forearm down to his wrist.

It was reported the man got away with about $100. He was last seen walking down an alleyway north of Highway 6 in Grafton, where the Grafton Mini Mart is located.

 If you have any information on the suspect, you are asked to contact the Fillmore County Sheriffís Office at 402-759-4441.

Phipps, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigations, was ordered to relinquish her daughter Kyley Phipps at 1 p.m. on Thursday, June 7, but instead Phipps went on the run with the girl instead of following the order to relinquish the girl, as the non-custodial parent of the 2 year old.

An Amber Alert was issued in Colorado at 7:25 p.m., Thursday, which put police agencies around the country on alert to find the woman and the young girl, while being on the lookout for a 2012 Nissan Pathfinder.

Man found guilty for distribution of meth

During a jury trial May 22-23, one man was found guilty for the distribution of methamphetamine in Sutton.

Eugene Cosey of Hastings was found guilty on Wednesday, May 23, in district court, according to Clay County Attorney Ted Griess.

SPS honored by Nebraska Department of Education during Career Education Conference in Kearney

Educators from all over the State of Nebraska filled the Younes Conference Center this week for the annual Nebraska Department of Education’s Career Education Conference, held June 4-7.

The conference theme, “Prepared Student. Great Futures,” was fitting for Sutton educators, as the Sutton Career and Technical Education program was honored as the top secondary CTE program in the State of Nebraska, while Brandy Thompson, secondary principal at SPS, was honored by her peers in the education field as the outstanding principal, during the awards ceremony Tuesday afternoon.
