Long-time Edgar EMT, resident passes away

Article Image Alt Text

Long-time Edgar resident and member of the Edgar Fire and Rescue Department, Bob Rose, passed away Saturday, Jan. 6.
Originally from Kearney, Rose, his wife, and two children moved to Edgar where he began teaching at Sandy Creek School as a math teacher in 1971. Although he retired from full-time teaching, Rose continued to work at SC as a substitute teacher until 2004.
Rose was heavily involved with the Edgar Fire and Rescue Department, and was one of two still active on the department since its start in July 1974, the other being Garry Steele. Along with his time spent on the department, Rose also served as the Clay County Emergency Manager for 31 years.
Due to his dedication, Rose was awarded the Health Leadership Award on March 4, 2015, by the South Heartland District Health Department. In an interview with the CCN, Rose said, “I was kind of humbled by it…I don’t think you think you’re doing anything special, you just do your job.”

Modest and humble are not the only two words that describe Ken and Nancy Overturf of Edgar, but they fit the words well.
The Overturfs were shocked to find that they had been selected for the fourth annual Clay County News’ Family of the Year, but said they are thankful for the nomination.
The duo was selected due to their involvement with activities and organizations outside of their own town, including Old Trusty Days, serving in capacities of the Clay County Historical Society, but also being heavily involved in their church and community events.

Article Image Alt Text

BY TORY DUNCAN

Rich Knoell, a 1985 Sutton High School graduate, never once in his life, while in high school, thought that he’d ever be doing what he’s done for nearly 30 years—having a long career in television, mostly as a video journalist for KABC Channel 7 in Los Angeles.

“I’d have never dreamt that I’d be in the business I’m in while growing up. I was a quiet, keep-to-myself kid and I wasn’t even sure what I wanted to do,” said Knoell.

County school administrators reflect on NeSA scores

BY ASHLEY D. SWANSON

Administrators in all three Clay County K-12 schools are looking toward a higher goal when it comes to preparing students for next year’s Nebraska State Standards Exam.

This year’s NeSA scores were released later than usual, in December, with expectations of lower scores across the board in schools throughout Nebraska. The lower scores are in part because of a change to the exam. In 2016, the exam focused on Math, Science, Writing, and Reading; this year’s switched gears to Math, Science, and English Language Arts, which replaced Writing and Reading. Another change this year was specifically for the 11th graders, who, in the past, also took the exam but were switched to only taking the ACT this year.

“I think administrators across the state knew that this round was going to be a tough round as far as how scores were going to come out,” Sutton Superintendent Dana Wiseman said.

Article Image Alt Text

Christmas came a little early for some in Clay County Wednesday, Dec. 20.

The 2017 Clay County Giving Tree welcomed more than 100 volunteers of every age, to help wrap, sort, and deliver gifts to nine of the 11 towns in the county.

All it took was about an hour and a half to wrap more than 800 gifts for 402 individuals throughout the county. What started out with one family—Ed and Judy Barnes—has grown to a highly anticipated event each year for many, to spread a little extra Christmas spirit to those in need.
