Sutton CTE leaders share pathways model at career field day

Sutton’s Career Technology Education model took center stage at a Career field Collaboration Day, Feb. 14 at the ESU-10 offices in Kearney.

The Sutton team that leads the Career Pathways program includes High School Principal Brandy Thompson and Counselor Sharon Zoucha, along with educators Steve Ramer, Nancy Schlautman, Jesse Bower and Zach Parrish. Parrish and Thompson led two 55 minute sessions related to the pathways program at Sutton, as well as, the process in which SPS received a reVISION Grant from the Nebraska Department of Education, along with the Nebraska Departments of Labor and Economic Development.

SCNUSD #5 accepts Gilson’s resignation

The South Central Nebraska Unified Board of Education accepted the resignation of Superintendent Randall Gilson effective June 29, 2018.

 Amid jokes of changing the date to 2019, the board unanimously accepted the resignation letter.

USAF Heartland of America Offutt Brass Band entertains Edgar

Members of the United States Air Force Heartland of America Offutt Brass Band performed a number of brass ensembles in Edgar Monday, including classical selections, patriotic favorites, jazz and popular music, new compositions, and distinctive arrangements.

County Shooting Sports still exciting 29 years later

With 29 years of teaching kids archery and gun safety under their belts, David Woods and Wayne Peshek are still enjoying seeing the kids accomplish new goals during the six weeks of Marksman Club as part of the County’s 4-H program.

“Seeing the satisfaction on the kids’ face is what does it for me,” Peshek said. “Seeing the kids smile when they come off the line is what gives me the satisfaction to keep this going.”

Harvard Council approves mayor, councilman resignations

In two special meetings Jan. 30 and 31, the Harvard City Council accepted two resignations and voted in two new council members.

On Jan. 30, council members approved the resignation of council member Mike Lambert, for Ward 1, while on Jan. 31, the council accepted the resignation of Mayor Michael Boyd.

Johnson honored as NE Farm Bureau Foundation Teacher of the Year

The Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation has selected two teachers as their Nebraska Agriculture in the Classroom 2018 Teachers of the Year. The Teacher of the Year is awarded to two outstanding teachers that incorporate agriculture into their classroom through innovative ideas and lessons.

Stephanie Wolf, a special education teacher at Brady Public Schools in Brady and Jennifer Johnson, a thirdgrade teacher at Sutton Public Schools in Sutton were honored.

Crowd goes nuts for food at Edgar fundraiser

A line of people reaching throughout the Edgar Legion and outside to the sidewalk wait for their meal during the Fish and Nut Fry Fundraiser for Eric Musgrave, Saturday, Feb. 3. Musgrave was diagnosed with Metastatic Melanoma in May 2017, and although all of the lymphnodes on his neck have been removed, he still has to travel to Omaha every three weeks for an experimental drug, and has scans done every two months. The funds raised during the benefit will go toward bills, fuel, and meals.

Harvard Council approves mayor resignation

Bruce Smith, standing, is sworn in as council member for Ward 1 in Harvard.

In a second special meeting Wednesday, the Harvard City Council accepted the resignation of Mayor Michael Boyd and appointed another council member.

Once the resignation was approved, Council President Chad Williamson moved into the mayor's position. 

Bruce Smith was appointed to the vacant Ward 1 position.

Persons of interest in death of Sydney Loofe set for federal trial March 26

In December, when the body of 24-year-old Sydney Loofe was found, two suspects, Aubrey Trail, 51, and Bailey Boswell, 23, denied involvement with the disappearance of Loofe, according to a video the duo posted on social media.

The two were arrested in December, in connection with the transportation of stolen goods in Kansas. Trail and Boswell face multi-count indictments related to an alleged fraud scheme in which they are accused of bilking a Kansas couple out of $400,000. Although they were considered persons of interest, there was no arrest for the death of Loofe.

Hankins, Swanson are CC’s firefighter, EMT of the year

For the fifth year, the Clay Center Fire and Rescue hosted its Firemen’s Ball, honoring those who are serving as either a firefighter, EMT or both.

This year, the EMT of the Year went to Bob Swanson, who has been on the department for 32 years. The Firefighter of the Year went to Jake Hankins, who has been on the department for 17 years. Rookie of the Year was Jake Vike, who has served for two years.
