Edgar veteran reminisces Air Force, co. VSO careers

Edgar veteran reminisces Air Force, co. VSO careers

It all began with a draft notice for the Korean War.

Born and raised in Edgar, Jack Cox had been working for two years at the Hastings Naval Ammunition Depot since his 1950 graduation from Edgar High School. His shift supervisor was a Navy man and had warned Cox that the draft would put him on the frontlines unless he enlisted on his own volition.

To avoid the draft, Cox and a friend opted to join the Navy. The only problem was that the Navy recruiter was not in the office that day, so they went with the branch of military whose recruiter was represented—the U.S. Air Force.

HPS Board discusses various items Monday

HPS Board discusses various items Monday

BY ASHLEY D. SWANSON

Harvard’s School Board covered a variety of topics during its Monday meeting.

Harvard has declared to stay in the six-man football realm, meaning for the next two years, unless enrollment numbers change for boys in nine through 12th grades, Harvard may not be eligible for playoffs.

Principal Neil Riley gave an update on the zSpace units. Six units are now in the building and are used as 3D learning modules in the science area. Riley said they are hoping HPS will be able to get additional funds for more subject options in the future.

Changes for voters to come in 2020

Registered voters may have noticed a postcard from the Clay County Courthouse sent to them, stating voting changes to come in 2020.

As of next year there will no longer be polling places and all future elections will be held by mail only. A ballot will automatically be mailed to voters from the Clay County Clerk’s Office.

This change in how Clay County will cast its votes comes from a number of reasons, including increased costs, more stringent ADA requirements, difficulty finding poll workers; and an increased concern in polling place security.

County Fair auction helps aid NE flood relief efforts

County Fair auction helps aid NE flood relief efforts

The annual auction is a familiar way to end the Clay County Fair for 4-H’ers and county communities, as seen here as a 4-H participant shows off his cow.

This past July, on the last day of the Clay County Fair, 4-H members led their market beef, goats, hogs, and sheep around the arena one last time for the 4-H Livestock Auction.

The auction gives an opportunity for 4-H and FFA members who showed livestock at each county fair to receive extra premium awarded through the bids by local and area businesses. For many youth, these dollars go to pay for animal feed and other costs accrued through the current year’s project, and ensure that they can continue the project the next year.

“The auction buyers are the valuable link to the auction,” Deanna Peshek, Clay County Extension assistant said. “Without the wonderful support of the buyers, this would not be possible.”

Secretary of State releases the 2020 election calendar

LINCOLN—Secretary of State Robert B. Evnen announced that the 2020 election calendar has been published on the Secretary of State website.

“Being able to vote or run for an office is of critical importance to Nebraska citizens,” Secretary Evnen said. “My office works very hard to ensure every Nebraska citizen has an opportunity to participate in elections either as a candidate, a voter or both. The 2020 election calendar has been reviewed and approved by the Attorney General, according to law, and is ready for public viewing.”

Jason Brockman shows a couple of younger 4-H’ers techniques during the beef fitting contest at the 2019 Clay County Fair.

Jason Brockman, a junior at Sandy Creek High School, has been selected as one of 26 outstanding Nebraska 4-H members to earn the opportunity to represent Nebraska at the National 4-H Congress, in Atlanta, beginning on Friday, Nov. 29, running through Tuesday, Dec. 3.

Brockman, the son of Steve and Cheryl Brockman of Deweese, was selected, according to Brockman, based on his writing and keeping track of his record book throughout his 4-H career.

“I won the animal science division related to my record book organization, locally, on the district level, as well as on the state level,” shared Brockman.

For over 99 years, the National 4-H Congress has been a premiere nationwide opportunity for 4-H members across America.

The event was originally held in Chicago before moving to the “Capitol of the South,” Atlanta.

The five-day event engages high school aged 4-H members in leadership, citizenship, global awareness, and inclusion.
