Registered voters may have noticed a postcard from the Clay County Courthouse sent to them, stating voting changes to come in 2020.

As of next year there will no longer be polling places and all future elections will be held by mail only. A ballot will automatically be mailed to voters from the Clay County Clerk’s Office.

This change in how Clay County will cast its votes comes from a number of reasons, including increased costs, more stringent ADA requirements, difficulty finding poll workers; and an increased concern in polling place security.

Cheryl Brockman was named as an outstanding 4-H leader, earning the Herman J. and Alene M. Valentine Memorial 2019 Outstanding Leader Award during the 4-H achievement awards night Sunday, Nov. 3.

This past July, on the last day of the Clay County Fair, 4-H members led their market beef, goats, hogs, and sheep around the arena one last time for the 4-H Livestock Auction.

The auction gives an opportunity for 4-H and FFA members who showed livestock at each county fair to receive extra premium awarded through the bids by local and area businesses. For many youth, these dollars go to pay for animal feed and other costs accrued through the current year’s project, and ensure that they can continue the project the next year.

“The auction buyers are the valuable link to the auction,” Deanna Peshek, Clay County Extension assistant said. “Without the wonderful support of the buyers, this would not be possible.”

LINCOLN—Secretary of State Robert B. Evnen announced that the 2020 election calendar has been published on the Secretary of State website.

“Being able to vote or run for an office is of critical importance to Nebraska citizens,” Secretary Evnen said. “My office works very hard to ensure every Nebraska citizen has an opportunity to participate in elections either as a candidate, a voter or both. The 2020 election calendar has been reviewed and approved by the Attorney General, according to law, and is ready for public viewing.”

Jason Brockman, a junior at Sandy Creek High School, has been selected as one of 26 outstanding Nebraska 4-H members to earn the opportunity to represent Nebraska at the National 4-H Congress, in Atlanta, beginning on Friday, Nov. 29, running through Tuesday, Dec. 3.

Brockman, the son of Steve and Cheryl Brockman of Deweese, was selected, according to Brockman, based on his writing and keeping track of his record book throughout his 4-H career.

“I won the animal science division related to my record book organization, locally, on the district level, as well as on the state level,” shared Brockman.

For over 99 years, the National 4-H Congress has been a premiere nationwide opportunity for 4-H members across America.

The event was originally held in Chicago before moving to the “Capitol of the South,” Atlanta.

The five-day event engages high school aged 4-H members in leadership, citizenship, global awareness, and inclusion.
