James Ralph Baird

James (“Jim”) Ralph Baird, 76, died Sunday, March 28, at his home in Clay Center. He was born July 25, 1944, to Ralph F. and Fern M. (Jenny) Baird at Mary Lanning Hospital in Hastings.

Jim grew up in Blue Hill, graduated from Blue Hill High School, and thereafter obtained a Bachelor’s degree from Hastings College. While attending college, Jim continued to live at home and tended to a small dairy herd (“to pay for tuition,” he explained). He often shared this commute to college with another Blue Hill resident, Karen Toepfer, who was to become his wife for over 40 years.

Jim and Karen had two children, Molly and James. Jim and his family lived in Hastings before moving to Clay Center in 1976.

Emerson Ransom

Emerson Eugene Ransom, age 94, of Sidney, passed away at home with his family present by his side on Thursday, March 18, 2021, of natural causes. Funeral services were at 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 23, 2021, at the Light Memorial Presbyterian Church, with Reverend Mary Jo Dean officiating. Burial was in the Greenwood Cemetery in Sidney. Dorothy “Dot” VonSpreckelsen

Former Clay Center resident Dorothy “Dot” Irene VonSpreckelsen, 89, passed away March 10, 2021, at CHI Nebraska Heart Hospital in Lincoln.

Funeral services were conducted at 10:30 a.m., March 13, 2021, at the Evangelical Free Church in Hastings, with Pastor Scott DeWitt and Pastor Matt Sass officiating. Interment followed at the Clay Center Cemetery in Clay Center. Visitation was held Fri. March 12, from 5–7 p.m., at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel in Clay Center.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the donor’s choice, the College of Saint Mary in Omaha, or the Evangelical Free Church in Hastings.

Muriel L. Waldecker, 87, passed away Friday, March 5, 2021, at the Henderson Health Care Hospital in Henderson.

Private family funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, March 11, 2021, at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton, with Rev. Scott Henry officiating. Interment will follow at the Emmanuel Reformed Church Cemetery near Sutton. Private family visitation will be held on Wednesday at Sutton Memorial Chapel.

Shirley A. Engel, 85, of Lawrence, KS, passed away Feb. 26, 2021, at Brookside Retirement Community in Overbrook, KS.

Shirley was born on Oct. 29, 1935, in Inland, to W.A. and Lillian (Brehm) McCune. She was raised in Harvard and graduated from Harvard High School in 1953. She worked for Harvard State Bank for many years until they moved to Lawrence, KS, in May of 1976. She then went to work for Douglas County Bank in Lawrence and retired from there in 1993.

Roger J. Sheridan

Roger Joseph Sheridan, 99, passed away Thursday, Feb. 18, 2021, at the Eastern Nebraska Veterans’ Home in Bellevue.

A Rosary will be prayed at 7 p.m., Friday, June 4, 2021, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sutton. Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10 a.m., Saturday, June 5, 2021, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sutton, with Father Michael Zimmer officiating. Military graveside services will follow at the Calvary Cemetery in Sutton.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Roger’s name may be made to the Sutton American Legion Post 61 Club for building maintenance.

Timothy Hoins

Timothy Delray Hoins, 52, passed away Feb. 19, 2021, in Hanford, CA, as the result of a car accident. He was born April 24, 1968, in Hastings to Robert E. and Peggy (Sessler) Hoins.

Tim grew up in Fairfield, where he was baptized and confirmed in the Fairfield Community Presbyterian Church.

He graduated from Sandy Creek High School in 1986. In 1991 he received a Bachelor of Journalism degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. On Sept. 14, 1991, he married Kristy Prokop in Omaha. Together they raised three sons.

Jennie Jean Eck

Jennie Jean Eck

Jennie Jean Eck, 84, of Henderson, died Sunday, Feb. 28, 2021, at Henderson. She was born Nov. 18, 1936, in rural Hamilton County to Reinhart J. and Lillie (Friesen) Peters. Jennie was a member of Bethesda Mennonite Church, and on April 27, 1956, she was united in marriage to Mahlon Eck in Henderson.

Jennie helped run the family farm alongside her husband. She also enjoyed being involved with Mission Circle, baking, sewing, crafting, camping, and gardening.

She is survived by her sons Nathan (Sally) Eck, and Anthony Joe Eck, both of Henderson; daughters Joy (Frank) Steckly of Beaver Crossing, and Dawn (Marty) Meinzer of York. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, several nieces, nephews, and a host of friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, and two brothers.

Matthew Domeier

Matthew Alan Domeier was born on Nov. 26, 1982, in the Fillmore County Hospital to Rodney and Cherlyn (Knigge) Domeier. He was the “baby” in a family of three and came into this world as unexpectedly as he left it. Matt was baptized at Grace Lutheran Church in a private ceremony so that his sister and brother could be present. His baptism was confirmed at Trinity Lutheran Church in Grafton. He passed away on Feb. 11, 2021, in the farm home near Sutton.

Sutton resident Doreen “Nadine” Margaret (King) Johnson, 86, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 9, 2021, at the Sutton Community Home in Sutton.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, Feb. 13, 2021, at the Federated Church in Sutton, with Rev. Mary Scott officiating. Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m., Saturday, Feb. 13, 2021, at the Harvard Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, from 1–7 p.m., with the family present from 5–7 p.m., at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton.
