Clay Center resident, Arlene A. Platek, 72, passed away Tuesday, Jan. 19, 2016, at CHI Health St. Francis in Grand Island, NE. Rosary was 6 p.m., Sunday, Jan. 24, 2016, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Harvard, NE. Mass of Christian burial was 10 a.m., Monday, Jan. 25, 2016, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Harvard, NE, with Father Julius Tvrdy officiating. Interment followed at the Clay Center Cemetery in Clay Center, NE. Visitation was Sunday, from 2–4 p.m., at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel in Clay Center, NE. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family to be designated later. Condolences may be left at www.mclaughlinchapel.com Arlene was born Feb. 16, 1943, in Howard County, NE, to William V. and Helen C. (Buresch) Hansen. She received her education at rural schools in Howard and Sherman Counties and graduated from Litchfield High School. She married Arnold R. Platek on June 25, 1963, in Pleasanton, NE.

Bonnie Wicker

Bonnie Wicker, the daughter of Joseph and Alice (Bueoy) Culbertson, was born May 27, 1932, at Oak, NE. She departed this life on Saturday, Jan. 16, 2016, at Superior, NE, at the age of 83 years. Bonnie was united in marriage to Richard Frank Wicker on July 14 1978, at Nelson, NE. Together they owned and operated Wicker TV in Edgar, NE. Survivors include sons: Lynn Holt and David Wicker, both of Hastings, NE, and many other relatives. Memorial services will be held at a later date. Williams Funeral Home of Edgar, NE, is in charge of the arrangements.

Ruth Fern McCann

Ruth Fern McCann, 99, died Jan. 16, 2016, in Tucson, AZ. She was born in Grant County Nebraska on May 7, 1916. She is preceded in death by her husband, Lloyd E. McCann; parents, Charles and Sophie Erickson; and sisters, Violet and Lillian. Private interment took place at the Sutton Cemetery in Sutton, NE.

JACOB & TAYLER JOHNSON

Brother and sister, Jacob "Jake" Bruce Johnson, 17, born Nov. 11, 1998, and Tayler Rae Johnson, 15, born Feb. 22, 2000, of Clay Center, NE, passed away on Dec. 29, 2015. Jake was a junior at Sandy Creek High School. Jake played football and basketball and was a member of FFA. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with family and friends. Tayler was a sophomore at Sandy Creek High School. Tayler was a member of the FFA and loved her family and being with friends. Tayler loved all kinds of animals, bringing home lots of strays. Jake and Tayler are survived by parents, Rick and Sue (Schliep) Johnson of Clay Center; brother Brandon (Brianna) Johnson of Omaha; sisters, Amber (Tony) Sacher of Omaha; Megan (Rickuel) Martin of Virginia Beach, VA; Brittini (Adam) Kircher of Omaha; nine nieces and one nephew; grandparents, Wesley and Marilyn Schliep; numerous aunts, uncles and cousins.

BILLIE J. LARSON

Billie Jean Larson, 91, lifelong resident of Edgar, passed away on Thursday, Dec. 31, 2015, in Lincoln, NE. Billie was born on Sept. 27, 1924, to Ralph and Fannie (Jeffs) Mileger in Edgar, NE. Billie Jean was a graduate of Edgar High School (Class of 1942) and the Lincoln School of Commerce. After a year of teaching country school, Billie traveled by train to Washington D.C., to work in the War Department during World War II. There, she met Carl Chester "Chet" Larson, also from Edgar, and serving at the Pentagon in the Army Air Corps. They were married on May 2, 1945. Following the war, they returned to Edgar and raised two children, John Steven and Jill Elaine. Their first-born, Carl Jr., died as an infant. Many happy years followed, raising her family alongside the growing families of her two sisters, Bobbie Shuck and Pat Swanson, also Edgar residents. As the children became older, Billie was hired by the City of Edgar as City Clerk.

JAMES L. PREISSLER

James L. Preissler, 97, of Harvard, passed away Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015, at the Harvard Rest Haven in Harvard. Rosary was held at 6 p.m., Sunday, at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Harvard, with Father Julius Tvrdy officiating. Mass of Resurrection was Monday at 10:30 a.m., also at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. Visitation was held from 3-6 p.m., Sunday, at St. Joseph’s in Harvard. Burial was in the Harvard Cemetery. James was born on Aug. 20, 1918, in Clay County, NE, to Emanual and Clara Warner Preissler. Jim married Laurine Trausch on Nov. 20, 1941. Before and during WWII, Jim worked for Lockheed Aircraft in Los Angeles, CA. After the war, they moved to rural Harvard, NE, to farm. James was a lifelong member of the St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Harvard. He was also a member of the Eagles Club in Hastings.

VIVIAN L. HYNES

Vivian LaVone Hynes, 86, of Hastings, formerly of Harvard, died Dec. 18, 2015, at Mary Lanning HealthCare. Memorial services were Tuesday, Dec. 29, 2015, at 2 p.m., at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Harvard. Visitation was Monday, Dec. 28, 2015, from 5-7 p.m., at Apfel Funeral Home, Hastings, NE, with a rosary following at 7 p.m., at the Apfel Funeral Home, Hastings, family and friends were invited. Apfel Funeral Home, Harvard, was in charge of the arrangements. Condolences may be sent to the family from www.apfelfuneralhome.com. Memorials may be given to the family. LaVone was born on Aug. 31, 1929, in Hastings, NE, to Phillip and Margaret (Eckhardt) Hahn. She grew up in Hastings and graduated from Hastings High School. She was united in marriage to James Hynes on April 18, 1949. The couple lived in Harvard, NE from 1953-2007, when they moved to Hastings. LaVone was employed by Hastings Regional Center until her retirement in 1989.
