Duayne W. Robley

Duayne W. Robley

Former Sutton resident, Duayne Robley, passed away Aug. 22, 2020, at the Central Nebraska Veteran’s Home in Kearney, one month shy of his 100th birthday.

Duayne Wesley Robley, 99, was born Sept. 23, 1920 in Mount Vernon, SD to Lee and Elsie (Taplin) Robley. He grew up on a ranch south of Timber Lake, SD. He was a cowboy until the fall of 1939 when he went to Washington state and worked at various jobs till the fall of 1941. He started cooking in a small diner then cooked at the Army Hospital in Vancouver until war broke out in 1941. He joined the Navy Dec. 21, 1941 and married Marie Tate on Dec. 23, 1941. Three children were born to this union. He started cooking at the naval base in Astoria, OR, then transferred to the USS Charleston and was stationed in Alaska. He was honorably discharged from the Navy on Oct. 5, 1945.

Jay P. Gunn

Jay P. Gunn, the son of Donald and Mary (Ahrens) Gunn, was born July 7, 1955 in Superior. He departed this life on Friday, Aug. 21, 2020 at Mary Lanning Health Services in Hastings, at the age of 65 years.

Graveside services were at 11 a.m., Wednesday, Aug. 26, at the Edgar Cemetery, Edgar. Pastor Ethan Feistner will be officiating. There will be no visistation; Mr. Gunn was cremated. Condolences may be sent to the family at wmsfh.com. Williams Funeral Home of Edgar is in charge of the arrangements.

Daniel J. Carpenter

Hastings resident Daniel J. Carpenter, 17, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 19, 2020, at Mary Lanning Healthcare in Hastings.

Memorial Service was 10 a.m., Monday, Aug. 24, at Butler Volland Chapel in Hastings, with Pastor Jessica Palys officiating. The service will be live streamed on Livingston Butler Volland Funeral Home’s Facebook page. The direct link for that page is www.facebook.com/ lbvfh.

A book signing was Saturday, Aug. 22, from 9 a.m.–5 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Big Brothers/Big Sisters of America—Hastings Chapter.

For the health and safety of others face masks are required for those attending the visitation and funeral, your cooperation is appreciated. Since there are material sharing restrictions, we ask that you bring your own pen for signing the registration book or memorial envelopes. If you do not bring one, we can do that for you.

Mass of Christian Burial will be conducted at 10 a.m., Thursday, Aug. 26, 2020, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sutton, with Father Michael Zimmer officiating. Services will be live-streamed from stmaryssutton.org. Interment will follow at Calvary Cemetery in Sutton. Visitation will be Wednesday, from 1 –5 p.m., at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton.

Sutton resident Patricia Ann (Reinsch) (Claus) Bourke, 87, passed away Sunday, Aug. 16, 2020, at her beloved farm home in Sutton with her family surrounding her.

Alvin Paul Alms, 87, of Grand Island, died April 21, 2020, at Emerald Lakeview.

Alvin’s family would like to invite family and friends to a celebration of Alvin’s life. Join us for dinner at the Grand Island Saddle Club on Friday, Aug. 21, 2020, from 6 to 8 p.m. Those planning to attend are asked to please RSVP to the Saddle Club at 308-382-1966. Alvin was born on Aug. 26, 1932 in York to Paul and Anna (Richert) Alms. He grew up in York and received his education at Benedict High School. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and was honorably discharged. He was united in marriage to Jacquelyn Kay Meves on July 1, 1961, in Grand Island. The couple briefly lived in Omaha and later moved to Grand Island where he began Alvin P. Alms and Co. where he was a CPA for 50 years.

Elizabeth (Liz) Jane Henning of Hebron, the daughter of Raymond and Florence (Wright) Dawson was born May 29, 1952 in Columbus. She departed this life Monday, July 27, 2020, at her home in Hebron, at the age of 68 years.Liz grew up in St. Edward, attending school and graduated from St. Edward High School with the class of 1970. She continued her education attending Kearney State College in Kearney.

Liz married Ray Henning Dec. 23, 1971, at the Presbyterian Church in St. Edward. This union was blessed with the birth of two children.

The couple made their home in Hebron where Liz worked for Blue Valley Lutheran Care Home, Brand X Saloon, Ortman’s Cafe, Hebron Journal, Casey’s, and Central Market.

Mike Shimko

Mike Shimko

Mike Shimko passed away on April 28, 2020, in Palm Springs, CA. It was at his request to be cremated and his ashes to be spread in the ocean waters of Los Angeles, CA.

Mike was born on Dec. 29, 1947, at the Mary Lanning Hospital, in Hastings. As a child he was involved with the childhood sports of basketball and baseball.

In school he was involved with singing and other classroom activities. He graduated from Edgar High School with the class of 1966. He later attended and graduated from the School of Business in Grand Island.

After business school, he entered into the Army where he served two terms in Vietnam. After his military service, he entered in civilian life of labor with the California Motor Vehicles; later he went into a private landscaping business.

He also did portrait paintings and creative wall hangings with art and studio shows in Lincoln, Los Angeles, CA, and Palm Springs, CA. For years after his military service, he suffered physically

Lois Ann (Yost) Kreutz of Aurora passed away on April 28, 2020, at Westfield Quality Care in Aurora at the age of 90.

A Memorial Service will be held 11 a.m., Saturday, Aug. 15, at the Phillips United Methodist Church Rev. Greg Reed will officiate. Current CDC guidelines will be followed. Face masks are required. Memorials may be made to the Hamilton Community Foundation in memory of her daughter, Patricia Ann Kreutz. Lois Ann was born Aug. 19, 1929, on a farm near Harvard, to William J. and Anna Elizabeth (Brehm) Yost, the sixth of seven children.

Harvard resident, Cynthia (Cindy) Marie Hamburger, 61, passed away Tuesday, July 21, 2020 at her home.

Services were at 10:30 a.m., Saturday, July 25, 2020, at the Apfel Funeral Home Chapel, Hastings. Burial will be in the Inland Cemetery, Inland. Cindy was born Dec. 30, 1958 to Richard and Joan (Phagan) Lowry in Scottsbluff, and raised on a farm in Limon. She attended Wheatland Elementary School till the 8th grade then graduated from Morrill High School Morrill, NE in 1977. She attended Pillsbury Bible College in Owatonna, MN for one year and then transferred to the Mary Lanning School of Nursing in Hastings, graduating in 1981 as a RN. She married David Hamburger on Jan. 2, 1982 in Morrill.
