Mary Ellen (Robinson) Kennedy

Mary Kennedy went to her eternal home in heaven on June 30, 2020, surrounded by the love and support of her family; she was 81. Mary was born April 3, 1939 to Sylvester and Nellie Robinson in Zion, IL.

Mary married the love of her life Roy Kennedy Jr. on March 3, 1956 and they were blessed with six children. Everyone should strive for a love like theirs. Mary spent her last years in Lincoln living with their daughter Sue.

Mary enjoyed spending time with family. She supported her children and grandchildren in all their activities and loved to cheer them on in everything they were involved in.

Mary is preceded in death by her husband Roy, their son Gregory, and many other loved ones. She is survived by her children Steve (and Shelly) Kennedy of Mesa, AZ, Sue Kennedy of Lincoln, Mark (and Tami) Kennedy of Hastings, Shelly (and Eugene) McLaughlin of Sutton, and Amy (and Terry) Haines of Hastings.

Shirley Mae Van Groningen

Sutton resident Shirley Mae (Ham) Van Groningen, 84, passed away Wednesday, July 1, 2020, at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.

Private graveside services were conducted at the Sutton Cemetery in Sutton. Visitation, with a closed casket, was held Sunday, July 5, 2020, from 1 p.m.–8 p.m., at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family to be designated later.

Shirley Mae Ham Van Groningen was born in Saronville on July 17, 1935, to parents Ernest Oliver and Blanch Ella (Higgins) Ham.

Shirley grew up on the family farm, one mile west of Saronville and attended Saronville School through grade 8. She was a member of the Saronville Methodist Church.

Gary Leroy Shuck

Gary Leroy Shuck of Edgar, the son of Wendell and Vera Schlachter Shuck, was born April 27, 1942, at San Pedro, CA. He passed away on Saturday, July 4, 2020 at Mary Lanning Health Care Services in Hastings at the age of 78 years.

Gary moved with his family to Edgar in 1948. He graduated from Edgar High School in 1960. He was united in marriage to Carolyn Kinnaman on June 12, 1960. This union was blessed with three sons. Gary spent his life farming at Diamond 7 of Edgar.

He is preceded in death by his parents.

Gary’s interests included his antique tractors, spending time with family and friends, attending grandkid’s and great-grandkid’s activities, and Nebraska Football.

Gary E. Jones, 79, of Central City, died April 13, 2020, at his home surrounded by his family.

Memorial Services will be Saturday, July 11, 2020, at 10 a.m. at North Park (on corner of D Ave. and B Street) in Central City. The family suggests that everyone attending bring their own lawn chair.

Fairfield resident Richard Lee “Dick” Laaker, 68, passed away Friday, July 3, 2020, at Mary Lanning Health Care in Hastings.

Services were held at 10 a.m., Wednesday, July 8, at Zion Lutheran Church in Hastings, with Pastor Paul Warneke officiating. Burial was at Fairfield Cemetery at 1 p.m. in Fairfield. Visitation was 1-7 p.m. with family present 5-7 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, at the funeral home, and one hour prior to services at the church. Jean Priefert

Jean (Bernasek) Priefert was born March 1, 1935 in Geneva, to James and Alba (Fujan) Bernasek. She passed away June 21, 2020, at her home near Fairmont at the age of 85 years, 3 months, and 20 days.

She graduated from Geneva High School. On Sept. 5, 1954, she married Neil Priefert at the United Brethren Church in Geneva. Neil and Jean were married for 63 years. Four daughters filled their home with activity; Mary,ters filled their home with activity; Mary, Carol, Linda and Susan.

Orlo Carriker, age 86, of Aurora, formerly of Phillips, passed away Saturday, June 27, 2020, at Select Specialty Hospital in Lincoln.

Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Wednesday, July 1, at Higby-McQuiston Mortuary in Aurora. A private family funeral service will be conducted. A public graveside service will take place at 10:45 a.m., Thursday, July 2, at the Phillips Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the family to designate at a later date. Orlo D. Carriker, the son of LeRoy Strawn and Erma Katherine (Keller) Carriker, was born at Harvard, on Jan. 27, 1934, and passed away in Lincoln, on June 27, 2020, at the age of 86.

Orlo attended Rural District 68 near Harvard and graduated from Harvard High School in 1952. He worked on the family farm near Harvard.

Rosary was at 10 a.m., Monday, June 29, and Mass of Christian Burial followed at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Hastings, with Father Jeremy Hazuka officiating. Rosary and Mass was live-streamed on St. Michael’s Catholic Church Facebook page. Burial was at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Visitation was 1-5 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and one hour prior to the service at the church. Memorials may be given to St. Michael’s Catholic Church. Keith E. Shunkwiler

Keith E. Shunkwiler, 73, of Lincoln, formerly of Fairfield, passed away on June 26, 2020, at his home.

Funeral services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, July 2, 2020, at All Faiths Funeral Home. Dan Naranjo will officiate. Burial will follow in Fairfield.

Memorials in Keith’s name may be made to the donor’s choice.

Keith was born on Nov. 14, 1946, in Fairfield, to Wesley and Vera (Wallenburg) Shunkwiler.

Keith was raised in Fairfield where he graduated from high school. He continued his education and graduated with a degree in Applied Arts and Architectural Drafting from Central Community College in Hastings.

As a long time resident of Grand Island, Keith was employed by the Ordinance Plant, Diamond Engineering, Nathan Detroit’s and most recently, Overhead Door. Keith was an excellent athlete in High School and stayed active playing golf and pool. Keith had a gentle soul and was ready to help when needed.

Funeral services were 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 29, 2020, at the Clay Center Christian Church, with Pastor Arick Johanson officiating. Interment will follow at the Clay Center Cemetery, with Pastor Daniel Buller officiating. Visitation was Sunday, from 2 p.m.–8 p.m., with the family present from 4 p.m.–6 p.m., at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel in Clay Center.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Clay Center Christian Church, Pibel Bible Camp, or Crossroads Mission Avenue.
