Merle August VonSpreckelsen

Clay Center resident Merle August VonSpreckelsen, 64, met his Heavenly Father while at his home Wednesday, June 24, 2020.

Funeral services were 11:00 a.m., Monday, June 29, 2020, at the Clay Center Christian Church, with Pastor Arick Johanson officiating. Interment will follow at the Clay Center Cemetery, with Pastor Daniel Buller officiating. Visitation was Sunday, from 2 p.m.–8 p.m., with the family present from 4 p.m.–6 p.m., at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel in Clay Center.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the Clay Center Christian Church, Pibel Bible Camp, or Crossroads Mission Avenue.

Ronald Dale Michel

Ronald Dale Michel, age 70, of Lincoln (formally of Edgar) passed away on June 18, 2020, in Lincoln. He was born on June 16, 1950, in Auburn to Clarence and Ruby (Vickers) Michel. He moved to Edgar in 1958 and was raised by his great uncle and aunt Roy and Flora Arnold. He graduated from Sandy Creek High School in 1968 and went on to graduate from Central Nebraska Tech. Ron married LeAnn Mills on Sept. 26, 1970, in Edgar. He worked for Hastings Pork for 18 years and later, the United States Postal Service as a rural letter carrier, until his retirement.

Ron is survived by two daughters, Alicia Michel of York and Angela (Richard) Aust of Lincoln. Sisters Donna Schwenck of Omaha, Judy Michel of Blair, Vineta Eads of Tekamah, Patty Barley of Las Vegas, Bobbie Collins (Stan) of Fremont and Melody Eads of Columbus. Sisters-in-law Shirley (John) Osmer of Diablo, CA and Pam Eads of Gravois Mills, MO. Aunt Wilma Karr of Omaha, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Kendall Keith Schendt

Kendall Keith Schendt, the son of Eugene and Jean (Moncrief) Schendt, was born on Feb. 26, 1987, in Superior. He passed away on June 15, 2020, at the Brodstone Memorial Hospital in Superior at the age of 33 years, 3 months, 20 days.

Kendall was baptized by Fr. Frank Machovec and confirmed by Bishop Fabian Bruskowitz. He received his formal education attending and graduating from Lawrence/Nelson High School with the class of 2005. He was engaged in farming and farm related occupations, and lived in the communities of Mt. Clare, Lawrence, Hastings and Edgar. He was a member of Pheasants Forever and the Edgar Lions Club.

In his leisure time, Kendall enjoyed riding his Harley, target shooting, attending his nieces and nephew softball and t-ball games, not missing many. He loved being around them and enjoyed time with friends.

Rebecca Sue Engelhardt

Rebecca “Becky” Sue Engelhardt was born on June 15, 1959, in Hastings. She passed away at her home in Lawrence on June 14, 2020, one day shy of her 61st birthday.

Services were 9 a.m Friday, June 19, 2020, at the North Shore Assembly of God Church in Hastings, with Pastor Chris Johnson officiating. Burial of ashes will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Lawrence. There will be no viewing or visitation as her wishes were to be cremated. A memorial has been established to be designated at a later date. Private condolences may be sent to the family at www.mertenbutlermortuary. com. Merten-Butler Mortuary, Blue Hill, is in charge of arrangements.

Mary Ann Ulmer Schafer

On Monday, June 1, 2020, at the age of 89 years, five months and four days, the matriarch of our family, Mary Ann Ulmer Schafer, made one final journey, ascending to heaven on the wings of angels. Oh, what a beautiful moment in eternity it must be, being embraced within the loving arms of her Savior, and reunited with her husband, family and friends that preceded her in death. Mother was a member of the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Sutton and was baptized on Sunday, March 15, 1931. She received an education at Sunnyside (No. 20), a Clay County Country School.

Duane Harold McCauley

Duane Harold McCauley (formerly of Edgar) was born on Aug. 20, 1954, to Harold and Jennie (Hoffman) McCauley in Fairfield. He departed this life on Thursday, June 4, 2020, in Sutton at the age of 65 years.

Duane was raised with three sisters; Vivian, Chris, and Donita on a farm outside of Edgar. Duane graduated from Clay Center High School. After attending college and moving back into the Edgar area, he met and married Susan Neighbors on Aug. 26, 1983. They went on to expand their family with the birth of their son, Cody and daughter, Jacy.

Duane spent many years working by traveling around the countryside in his semi before he retired and went back to working in the local area. In 2000, Duane suffered a tragic accident that left him disabled. Throughout the years Duane got to know and become friends with many different people.

John Hadden

Former Edgar resident, John Hadden, passed away April 2, 2020, at a hospital in Henderson, NV. Due to the COVID-19 virus, a celebration of life for friends and family will be held at a later date.

John Charles Hadden was born on May 29, 1947, in Lincoln to Keith and Mary (Grote) Hadden Olson. He was raised on a farm by Edgar and graduated from Ong High School as salutatorian of the Class of 1965. He attended and graduated with a business administration degree from McPherson College in Kansas, where he also played on the basketball team. John married Trudy McAfee on Jan. 14, 1974, and they later divorced. To this union was born one child, Jennifer Charlotte Hadden.

Dale Jackson

Dale E. Jackson, 89, of Lincoln, formerly of Aurora, passed away May 19, 2020, at his home. Born Dec. 16, 1930 to D.A. and Nellie (Grossman) Jackson.

Dale was born in Nelson and started school in a one room school in Angus.

He graduated from Edgar High School in 1948 and from Hastings College in 1952. Following college, Dale served in the Army and was stationed in Germany. He married Valjean Bohlen in December 1958 and they had one daughter. Dale returned to school at the College of Hair Design and was a barber through his working years. In 1977 the family settled in Aurora,when Dale purchased a barber shop where he stayed until retirement. Dale was a lover of Husker football, technology, music, old movies and punny jokes.

Graveside services will be conducted at 10 a.m., Thursday, June 11, 2020, at the Stockham Cemetery in Stockham. Memorial services will follow at 11 a.m., Thursday, June 11, 2020, at the Stockham Community Church in Stockham, with Pastor Rick Bartek officiating.

Gwen Gayle Hurst

Gwen (Gwenie) Gayle Hurst returned to her heavenly home peacefully on March 5, 2019. She was born in Sutton, to Ruby and Gayle McLaughlin on May 15, 1941, and was adored by her siblings Betty, Jeanene, and Billy.

Gwen graduated from St. Elizabeth’s nursing college and married her high school sweetheart Tom Hurst, while he was in dental school. They moved to San Diego in 1962 and were blessed with four children, Bill, Steve, Dave, and Kristen. Gwen devoted her life to loving people and praying with anyone in need while sharing her midwestern culture and values.

She focused on doing God’s everlasting kingdom work! Gwen lead a bible study for 27 years and her gift of loving, encouraging, and pointing others to the Lord Jesus has left a beautiful legacy that spreads far, deep, and wide. She was a long time devoted member of the Clairemont Christian Fellowship where she served in the healing ministry.

Gwen joined her son, Billy, in heaven and is survived by her husband, Tom, her three children, in-laws Bridget, Shelli, and Randy and nine grandchildren. Gwen has been dearly missed and we look forward to reuniting with her in the presence of our faithful Lord.
