Fern L. (Braun) Kness

Fern Lavern (Braun) Kness was born to John Carl Braun and Augusta Clara Louise (Drews) Braun on Nov. 28, 1926, at Carleton, NE. She was baptized and later confirmed into the Christian faith. She passed away Jan. 26, 2019, at the Hearthstone in York, NE, at the age of 92 years, 1 month, and 29 days. She was the oldest of four children in the family.

Fern attended school in Martland, Hebron and Geneva. She graduated from Geneva High School in 1945. She worked at the Carleton Post Office for seven years following graduation.

Fern was married to Jackie G. Kness of Grafton, NE on March 13, 1953, and to them four children were born. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary in 2013.

Fern was a devoted farmer’s wife, homemaker and mother. She was not afraid to take on any task and helped out wherever she was needed. She lived her entire married life on the farm until moving to the Hearthstone in April of 2012. She will be remembered and missed by many.

Leland “Lee” T. Skalka

We regret to inform the general public that Nebraska’s favorite son, Leland “Lee” Thomas Skalka, passed away on Jan. 25, on his family’s original homestead that he passionately loved.

Rosary is 7 p.m., Friday, Feb. 1, at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, Deweese. Mass of Christian burial is Saturday, Feb. 2, at 10:30 a.m., at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church, Deweese, with Father Thomas Schultes officiating. Private family burial will be held at a later date. There will be no viewing; Lee’s wishes were to be cremated. Book signing will be 9–5 p.m., at the funeral home on Thursday, Jan. 31. Memorials may be given to the Fairfield Fire Department. Private condolences may be sent to the family at www.lbvfh.com. Fairfield resident Ramona (Heinrichs) Dana, 88, passed away Sunday, Jan. 20, 2019, at Fairview Manor, Fairmont, while on hospice care.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Butler Volland Chapel in Hastings, with Pastor Greg Lindenberger officiating. Interment will be at the Fairfield Cemetery, Fairfield. Memorials may be given to Ramona Dana Memorial Fund to be designated at a later date. Visitation is 1-8 p.m., Thursday, with family present 6-8 p.m., and one hour prior to service at the funeral home. Private condolences may be sent to the family at www.lbvfh.com. Dorothy M. Rabbe died Friday, Jan. 11, 2019, at her home in Sutton at the age of 90.

Services were held Jan. 15, 2019, at Zion Lutheran Church in Sutton, with Vicar Tim Stacy officiating. Burial was in the Sutton Cemetery, with Sutton Memorial Chapel in charge of arrangements. Pallbearers were Dorothy’s grandchildren, Michelle Gray, Melinda Rabbe, Miranda Watson, Matthew Rabbe, Darren Stahl, Travis Stahl and

Tiffany Gapp.

Eileen F. Nacke

Jan. 21, 1941 - Jan. 5, 2019

Eileen F. Nacke, the daughter, of Walter and Anna (Reith) Boerger,was born Jan. 21, 1941, at Linn, KS. She departed this life on Saturday, Jan. 5, 2019, at the Sutton Community Home in Sutton, at the age of 77 years.

Eileen moved along with her family as a young girl to Beatrice, where she graduated from Beatrice High School with the class of 1961. On Feb. 23, 1963, Eileen was united in marriage to Daniel Nacke in a double ceremony with Darrell and Katie Wilson at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Beatrice. To this union four children were born, two sons and two daughters. The couple were blessed with 18 years of marriage before Daniel’s death on March of 1981.

Eileen worked at Beatrice Lutheran Home, Fairbury Hospital and Edgar Nursing Home as a Certified Nursing Assistant and Medication Aide for over 40 years.

Dorothy A. Sobieszyk

Lakewood, CO resident Dorothy Ann Sobieszyk, 89, passed away Saturday, Dec. 22, at Collier Hospice Center in Wheat Ridge, CO. A rosary was prayed at 10 a.m., Monday, Dec. 31, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sutton. Mass of Christian burial followed at 10:30 a.m., at the church, with Father Michael Zimmer officiating. Interment was at Calvary Cemetery in Sutton. Visitation was one hour prior to the rosary. Condolences may be left at www.suttonmemorial.com.Dorothy Ann was born Dec. 28, 1928, in Hasting to Walter and Florence (Leininger) Joyce. She is survived by her son, Michael Sobieszyk; daughter, Mary Stever; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and sister, Kathleen Kiolbasa.

Merlin W. Bartell

Promoted to heaven after a brief illness of pancreatic cancer. Merlin was born in Red Wing, MN to Rev. George and Lola (Smith) Bartell. He spent his boyhood in Fredericksburg, IA. He was a graduate of Sutton High School, UNL and was a U.S. Army Vietnam Veteran. On Dec. 21, 1974, he married Marlene A Hennings in Omaha. He retired from Lincoln City Libraries. Merlin was an avid student of the bible and from the age of 28, he looked forward to his soon coming Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

He is survived by his wife, Marlene; children, Micah Bartell, Leander, TX, Cheryl (Jacob) Widhalm, Lincoln and Aaron Bartell, Lincoln; grandchildren, Bryson, Shea, Shelby, Kelson, Jameson and Aislynn; brothers, George (Jeanne) Bartell, Des Plaines, IL, Eugene (Karen) Bartell, Baltimore, MD, John (Sherrie) Bartell, Sutton, and sister-in-law, Elizabeth Bartell, Sutton, and nieces and nephews.

Merlin was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Thomas Bartell.

Homer V. Brauning

Homer V. Brauning, 90, of Geneva, entered his eternal rest on Monday, Dec. 17. He was born Feb. 16, 1928, on a farm outside of Grafton, to Ruben and Vera (Griess) Brauning and lived his life in Fillmore County. In 1955, he was united in marriage to Elinor Flory and to this union three children, Julianne, David and Paul, were born. Homer is survived by his wife, and children, sister, Norma Ely, and brother, Wayne Brauning, and was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Oliver, Wilbert and Robert. He will be greatly missed by friends, children, daughters-in-law and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. A funeral service for Homer was held Friday, Dec. 21, at 10:30 a.m., at the Hope Reformed Church in Sutton, with Rev. Scott Henry presiding. Organist Melissa Reichert accompanied the congregation as they sung three hymns; “Only Trust Him,’ “Stille Nacht” and “It Came Upon A Midnight Clear.” Pallbearers included Josh Bartell, Sam Brauning, Phil Brauning, J.D.
