LaVonne B. (Rath) Fitzke

Harvard resident, LaVonne Beverly “Bonnie” (Rath) Fitzke, 82, passed away Sunday, Dec. 16, at Mary Lanning Memorial HealthCare.

Services will be at 10 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 20, at the First United Methodist Church, Harvard, with Dorothy Aspegren officiating. Burial will be in the Harvard Cemetery, Harvard. Visitation will be Wednesday, Dec. 19, at 5-8 p.m., at the First United Methodist Church, Harvard. Apfel Funeral Home, Harvard, is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be given to the family to designate at a later date.

Leota Nuss

Sutton resident Leota Nuss, 81, passed away Thursday, Dec. 13, at CHI Health St. Elizabeth in Lincoln.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 20, at Hope Reformed Church in Sutton, with Pastor Scott Henry officiating. Interment will follow at the Sutton Cemetery. Visitation will be Wednesday, from 1–8 p.m., with the family greeting friends from 5–7 p.m., at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton, NE.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the family to be designated later.

Leota was born Aug. 2, 1937, to Carl C. and Clarice (Nuss) Griess in Sutton. She received her education at country school Districts 16 and 66. On Aug.4, 1955, she married Silas Nuss in Clay Center.

Robert W. Black

Robert W. Black (Boobus), (of Fairfield), was born Sept. 5, 1947. He was born to Robert F. and Lavon L. (Roth) Black. He departed this life Dec. 1, at the Brodstone Memorial Hospital in Superior.

Bobbie attended and graduated from Fairfield High School in 1965.

After high school, he joined the National Guard and later returned to begin employment with Deweese Sand and Gravel. He then joined Werner Construction in 1978. He later began employment with Clay County Highway Department in 1994, where he then retired in 2013 and was presently a supervisor on the Clay County Board.

Hastings resident Donald M. “Don” Robinson, 88, passed away Friday, Dec. 14, at Mary Lanning Healthcare, Hastings.

Services were 10:30 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 18, at All Saints Chapel–Good Samaritan Village in Hastings with Pastor Dale Phillips officiating. Burial was held at Parkview Cemetery in Hastings. Memorials may be given to the family for a memorial to be established at a later date. Visitation was one hour prior to service at All Saints Chapel. Services were 10 a.m., Tuesday, Dec. 18, at Butler Volland Chapel in Hastings, with Joyce and Ivan Dean officiating. Burial was held at Glenvil Cemetery in Glenvil. Virginia E. Portrey

Virginia “Ginny” Ellen Portrey passed from this life on Nov. 21, at Kensington Manor in Hastings at the age of 94 years.

A private family service will be graveside at the Edgar Cemetery, Edgar, at a later date. Williams Funeral Home of Edgar is in charge of the arrangements.

Ginny was born to Verna and Newton Gunn on July 1, 1924, in Edgar. She graduated from Edgar High School in 1942 and soon after moved, along with her brother, Bob, to Long Beach, CA, where they were employed at the Douglas Aircraft Company.

There Ginny met her future husband, Carl Kelly and after their marriage moved to Carl’s family farm in Cabool, MI, where Carl was employed by a car dealership and Ginny worked in management at the Levi Corporation. After Carl’s sudden death, Ginny moved to Houston, MI, where she eventually met and married Lester Portrey. Lester owned and operated a wrecking and repair service.

Opal P. Jones Drapal Nelson

Opal Pauline Jones Drapal Nelson of Edgar, was born August 29, 1931 to Paul and Etta (Headley) Jones at Webber KS. Pauline departed this life Tuesday, Nov. 13, at CHI/St. Francis Hospital in Grand Island, at the age of 87 years.

Pauline attended Superior Public School and on Dec. 20, 1950, married Junior James Drapal at the First Baptist Church in Superior, NE. To this union four children were born—Jimmy Lee, Linda Diane, Cynthia Sue and Johnny Paul. Pauline spent four years in Wyoming and Illinois during Junior’s Air Force service. After Junior’s discharge they settled on a farm in the Fairfield area and then moved into Edgar. Pauline worked many years at the Edgar Nursing Home.

Rosary was prayed at 7 p.m., Sunday, Nov. 18, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sutton. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Nov. 19, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church with Father Michael Zimmer officiating. Interment followed at Calvary Cemetery in Sutton. Visitation was Sunday, from 1–5 p.m., at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton.

Sterling L. Schelkopf

Dedicated veterinarian and livestock herd health program consultant, Dr. Sterling Schelkopf, 86, passed away on Nov. 14, at Westfield Quality Care in Aurora.

Sterling Lynn Schelkopf was born in Geneva on March 28, 1932, to Isaac and Magdalena (Shrock) Schelkopf. Sterling had three older brothers: Dean, Robert and Russell; two younger brothers, Stanley and Conley; and two younger sisters, Sharol (Cisney) and Mary (Wythers).

He grew up farming with his dad and brothers, graduating from Geneva High School in 1949. He joined the U.S. Army in 1952, serving as a Sergeant in the Korean War until 1954.

In June 1955, Sterling married Beverly Ham of Sutton, and they had five children together: Jeffrey (Teri), Kristin, Kurt (Shannon), Lewis (Lorraine) and Nancy.
