Gordon T. Stofer Aug. 19, 1945 - May 5, 2017

Gordon T. Stofer, 71, of Grand Island, died Friday, May 5, 2017, at CHI Health St. Francis in Grand Island,surrounded by his wife and daughters. Memorial services were at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, at St. Pauls Lutheran Church in Grand Island. The Rev. Edgar Schambach officiated. Gordon’s wishes were for cremation to take place. Military honors were provided by the United Veterans Honor Guard and U.S. Navy Honors Team immediately following the services at the church. Burial will be at a later date. Family greeted friends Wednesday from 9:30 a.m., until service time at the church. Memorials are suggested to the family to be determined later. Gordon Thomas Stofer was born Aug. 19, 1945, at Friend, NE. He graduated from Ong High School in 1963. He then attended community colleges in Fairbury, NE, San Diego, CA, and Scottsbluff, NE, graduating from UNL in 1977. Gordon served in the U.S. Navy from August 1965 until July 1969, when he was honorably discharged. He married Kay L.

Hastings resident, Frances Mae Murman, 91, passed away Wednesday, May 10, 2017, at Perkins Pavilion Good Samaritan Society–Hastings Village, Hastings, NE. Services were Monday, May 15, 2017, 11 a.m., at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, west of Glenvil,with Pastor Renee Johnson officiating. Burial was in St. Paul’s Lutheran Churchyard Cemetery. Memorials may be given to St. Paul’s Lutheran Church. Visitation was Saturday, May 13, 2017, 9 a.m.–5 p.m., Sunday, May 14, 2017, 1–8 p.m., with the family present from 6–8 p.m., at the funeral home, and one hour prior to service at the church. Frances was born July 18, 1925, to James and Margaret (Jensen) Larsen in Blair, NE. She graduated from Louisville High School. Frances married Menno John Murman on Jan. 5, 1947, he preceded her in death on Jan. 30, 1997.

Shirley J. Cooney Feb. 18, 1933 - May 1, 2017

Shirley Jean Cooney, 84, of Clay Center, NE, formerly of Overton, died Monday, May 1, 2017, at her son’s home in Clay Center. Shirley was born Feb. 18, 1933, in Overton, NE, to William Henry and Edna Murial (Stryker) Eliker. She grew up and attended school in Overton, except for nine years when they lived in Omaha and then returned to Overton, graduating with the class of 1951. She then went on to continue her education at Grand Island School of Business. She was united in marriage to Eugene J. Cooney on Oct. 4, 1952, in Overton. Three boys were blessed to this marriage; Michael, Richard and Eugene “Joe” Jr. The couple lived in Washington State for two years while Gene was in the military. Following this, they returned to Overton, where they would live until Shirley moved to Clay Center three years ago. Shirley was the head cook at Overton School for nine years. She was a member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Overton, as well as serving on the Altar Society.

Rural Hastings resident, Eugene Ray “Gene” Fitzke, 71, went to be with the Lord on Sunday, April 30, 2017, at The Ambassador in Lincoln, NE. Memorial services were Monday, May 8, 2017, at 3 p.m., at Clay Center Christian Church, Clay Center, with Pastor Kevin Whitmore officiating. Private family burial was in Fairfield Cemetery, Fairfield, NE. Memorials may be given to Clay Center Christian Church or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. There was no viewing or visitation. Gene was born July 25, 1945, to Orville and Iola (Skinner) Fitzke. He was married to Gail (Emrich) Fitzke on July 24, 1965, in Hastings, NE. Gene retired from Hastings Pork, currently known as Pillen Family Farm, after 50 years of dedicated service.

Former Clay Center, NE resident, Marcella Ann Kangas, 88, passed away Tuesday, May 2, 2017, at Bryan Medical Center East Campus in Lincoln, NE. Graveside services were held at 10 a.m., Monday, May 8, 2017, at the Clay Center Cemetery, with Pastor Bill Harrold officiating. Honoring her wish to be cremated, there was no viewing or visitation. Marcella Ann Kangas was born Nov. 7, 1928, to Bruce and Fearn (Adams) Young in Hastings, NE. She received her education in Nelson and Edgar. On April 2, 1947, she married Gene Thomas in Mankato, KS. She was employed with MARC as a Sensory Panelist and later at the Clay Center School as a custodian. Gene passed away in February of 1960 and Marcella moved to Clay Center with their five children, Teresa, Daniel, Richard, Sharon and Bryan.

Services were Monday, May 1, 2017, at 10:30 a.m., at the Harvard Church of Christ, with Pastor Dave Johnson officiating. Burial was in the First Evangelical Cemetery, Harvard, NE. She married Ivan Stiegemeier on Feb. 14, 1970, in Hastings, Ivan passed away July 20, 2013.

A rosary was prayed at 7 p.m., Sunday, April 30, 2017, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sutton, NE. Mass of Christian Burial was held at 10 a.m., Monday, May 1, 2017, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Sutton, NE, with Father William Holoubek officiating. Interment followed at the Calvary Cemetery in Sutton, NE. Visitation was Sunday from 1–5 p.m., with the family present from 1–3 p.m., at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton, NE. Genevieve Benlien Nov. 24, 1953 - April 18, 2017

Genevieve M. (Jenny) Benlien of Clay Center, NE, passed from her earthly life into the arms of her Lord, Jesus Christ, at 3:40 a.m., April 18, 2017, at Bryan-West Hospital, Lincoln, NE, due to complications of breast cancer. Jenny was born November 24, 1953, in Norton, KS, to Arthur and Vivian Benlien (Sperry). She was raised in Kansas and Nebraska, calling Nebraska home for the majority of her life. She married Thomas D. Wilson of Harvard, NE, May 26, 1973. Jenny was always her family’s greatest champion. She not only raised her own children, but four of her grandchildren, as well. She had a great love for them all and her love and influence will always be present in their lives and hearts. She is preceded in death by her mother and father, her grandmother Kitty Hartzog, and beloved brother-in-law, David Altman.

Military graveside services were held at 12:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 26, 2017, at the Sutton Cemetery in Sutton, NE, with Pastor Mary Scott officiating and military honors by the American Legion Argonne Post #61.
