Big wins come and big wins go, but in the case of the Sutton Senior Legion’s wins Saturday at Silver Creek, the Post 61 Seniors picked up one of the biggest wins in recent history for the program.

After gaining a 6-2 win over the UBC Badgers (Utica-Beaver Crossing) in the opening game at the Silver Creek tournament, Sutton, behind a one-hit pitching performance by Paxton Olson and an 8-1 hitting edge, upended the DCB (Dannebrog-Cairo-Boelus) Seniors 5-2, handing DCB its first loss dating back to 2019.

According to a DCB baseball social media post, it brought to an end a 60-game winning streak.

The wins improved Sutton to 10-7 on the year.

Led by solid pitching and a stingy defensive effort, the Sutton Junior Legion baseball team improved to 15-3 on the season, winning two of three games in action at Central City Saturday, June 25 and Sunday, June 26. A huge one-hit performance from Sutton hurler Payton Reed, the Post 61 Juniors rolled past Ord in the tournament opener Saturday afternoon, gaining a 9-2 win. Sunday’s action, however, started with an 8-7 setback loss at the hands of Albion, with Albion scoring five runs in the final two innings of the game to gain the win.

In typical fashion, Sutton bounced back with a solid 11-5 win over Central City to get back on the winning track.

Saturday’s performance by Reed on the hill proved to be a big win for the Sutton hurler.

Reed covered all seven innings on the mound, allowing just one hit and two runs while striking out nine and walking just two. Reed tossed 88 total pitches, with 59 being strikes.

It all started as it does for many junior high and high school student-athletes, those morning summer weight programs at most junior high and high school systems across the county.

But for Claire Williamson, a soon-to-be eighth-grader at Harvard Public Schools, weights became a love for the daughter of Chad and Stephanie Williamson of Harvard.

Her father shared, “We were fortunate to have former coach Cody Cahill start a morning summer weights program for junior high students this past summer when Claire was going into seventh grade. She started going and fell in love with lifting.”

Williamson’s passion for lifting weights then went one step further when Harvard’s powerlifting coach, Blake Bunner approached her about joining the Harvard team.

“She was interested in it so we signed her up for her first meet in Verdigre, Feb. 26 of this year.”
