“Begin with the end in mind.” That was a lasting theme that the Sutton Fillies volleyball team lived by during last weekend’s magical run in the Class C-2 state volleyball championships.

Prior to the tournament, Sutton head coach Shelli Mohnike shared that her team had just as big of a chance to win it all as anyone else that qualified for the tournament.

“Class C-2 is wide open and it’s up for anyone to win,” Mohnike said. Her Fillies took that to heart, all the while, developing a big case of cardiac issues for Sutton fans, parents, and other relatives, as Sutton made their way to the state title match Saturday, Nov. 6.

Sutton, the sixth seed in Class C-2, as it turned out, had to battle through a challenging field of East Husker Conference teams. First up was the third-seeded Patriots of Clarkson/Leigh, with the Fillies claiming an opening set, 25-21 win.

Wiseman is GPAC defensive player of the week for Doane

Doane football hit the road this past Saturday, as they traveled to Fremont to take on Midland. The Tigers forced five Warrior turnovers on the day as they posted a 24-13 win over Midland, snapping a four-game skid for the Warriors.

Following a three-and-out by Doane, Midland took over again near midfield. On the first play, 2020 Sutton High School graduate and Doane freshman Cade Wiseman made his first start in the Doane secondary intercepted a pass and raced 54-yards to the end zone to put the Tigers in front.

For his game turning play, Wiseman was tabbed as the GPAC defensive player of the week. Wiseman also made five tackles in the 11 point win over the Warriors.

The old saying that all good things must come to an end held stronger than ever for the Sutton Mustangs Friday night in David City.

The Aquinas Catholic Monarchs brought to an end the 2021 football season, beating the Mustangs 37-15 in the first round of the Class C-2 state playoffs, as Sutton closed out the year with a 6-4 record.

Not only did the loss end the season for Sutton, it also brought an era to a close in Mustang history, as Sutton will move to the 8-man ranks of high school football beginning with the 2022 season, competing in the Class D-1 field next season.

Sutton opened the game with the ball, taking the opening kickoff, but fell short of a first down on the opening possession, giving Aquinas their first shot with the ball.

Fillies advance to state

Dynamics of a team can oftentimes dictate the successes that come, and in the case of the Sutton Fillies, their will to bring Sutton’s volleyball program back to the top of the hill began back in June and July this past summer.

According to head coach Shelli Mohnike, the Fillies’ success this year began at a 7 a.m. summer camp with a simple, but meaningful message to her team, “begin with the end in mind.”

Sutton’s beginning was unknown, but it was developing. Coming off of a 12-12 season in 2020, Mohnike and her 2021 Fillies pushed hard...really hard.

“We just simply worked hard, each and every day last summer and when the season began I just felt as if we began the season with a big foot foward even before our first match back in late August,” shared Mohnike.
