For nearly three full quarters the Sutton Mustangs had a hard time shaking free from the Gibbon Buffaloes, and in the process lost a big part of their offensive playset, with junior quarterback Myles Jones exiting the game with what is likely a season-ending elbow injury.

But Gibbon proved to aid the Mustangs’ cause in the final 14 minutes of the game, turning the ball over four times, setting the Mustangs up with a 25-0 fourth-quarter run to ease their way to a dominating 47-0 shutout win over the Buffs.

Senior Jesse Herndon got the Mustangs on the board first late in the first quarter with an eight-yard touchdown run. A blocked extra-point kick by Gibbon’s Braden Miller left Sutton with the 6-0 lead as the game headed into the second period.

Paxton Olson posted the Mustangs’ second score of the game with 9:45 left in the quarter, as the senior charged five yards into the end zone for a 14-0 lead after Olson added the two-point conversion.
