In a rare afternoon clash between two longtime rivals, the Sutton Mustangs used their typical hardnosed rushing attack to gain an eighth straight win over the Sandy Creek Cougars, scoring six rushing touchdowns, while chewing up 395 yards on the ground to capture a 45-16 win and improve to 3-3 on the year, while the Cougars fell to 3-4 with the loss.

For the first eight minutes of this Clay County battle, it looked as if both teams were prepared to lock in and provide the large crowd at the home of the Cougars a big show.

Sutton took the opening kickoff from Sandy Creek and drove to the Cougar two-yard line to set up Sutton senior Paxton Olson with his first score of the game. After a Jonathan Olvera extra-point kick, Sutton held a 7-0 lead with 8:15 left to play in the first quarter.

Bluehawks deal tough blow to Mustangs

The Hastings St. Cecilia Bluehawks took a firm hold of the first-place spot in the Class C2-4 District standings, and in the process dealt Sutton a tough blow in the Mustangs’ hopes to make the Class C-2 state playoffs for what would be the 12th straight season.

Sutton held a 14-6 lead with 5:40 left on the third quarter clock before the momentum switched to the Bluehawks.

With senior Paxton Olson giving the Mustangs the eight-point lead late in the third period with a two-yard run into the end zone, St. Cecilia went into a hurry-up type offense and needed just a minute and a half to even the scoreboard at 14. The Bluehawks scored on a 40-yard touchdown pass, then added a twopoint conversion to tie the game.

St. Cecilia then took the lead on a 10-yard touchdown pass at the 10:19 mark of the fourth quarter and held on for dear life, as the Mustangs, behind a big punt return by Olson to the St. Cecilia 44 set up the Mustangs for a final run at the Bluehawks.

When asked why he chose the sport of demolition derby, Logan Wenske, a 2015 graduate of Sandy Creek High School was quick to the point, “I love wrecking cars.” End of story.

Well, his knack of wrecking cars has grown to a feat so high that this young man from the Deweese and Fairfield area finished 2021 atop the mountain of bent metal, winning the points standings of the Nebraska Demolition Derby Old School Series.

“I pretty much knew I had the lock on the win in the final standings after winning my home event in Deweese. That was pretty cool doing it at your home place in front of a lot of great people from my home area,” noted Wenske.

His win at Deweese was where it all started for Wenske.

“I got the bug for demolition derby after building a car for that event in 2018...I guess it just grew from there and here I am.”
