Logan Wenske, shown here during the Deweese Demolition Derby on Sunday, Aug. 14, became the best of the best in the Nebraska Demolition Derby Old School Points Series, not just winning the title in the series, but winning it by 106 points after the Nebraska State Fair event Monday, Sept. 6 in Grand Island. When asked why he chose the sport of demolition derby, Logan Wenske, a 2015 graduate of Sandy Creek High School was quick to the point, “I love wrecking cars.” End of story.

Well, his knack of wrecking cars has grown to a feat so high that this young man from the Deweese and Fairfield area finished 2021 atop the mountain of bent metal, winning the points standings of the Nebraska Demolition Derby Old School Series.

“I pretty much knew I had the lock on the win in the final standings after winning my home event in Deweese. That was pretty cool doing it at your home place in front of a lot of great people from my home area,” noted Wenske.

His win at Deweese was where it all started for Wenske.

“I got the bug for demolition derby after building a car for that event in 2018...I guess it just grew from there and here I am.”

Mustangs crush Fairbury 45-7

The Fairbury Jeffs found out early and often that they were dealing with a Sutton Mustangs team that was coming off a tough 36-22 loss at Wilber-Clatonia in week two of the football season. Just one week removed from a stinging 7-0 road loss at Gibbon, the Sandy Creek football team had their eyes set on getting back on the winning track during the Cougars’ homecoming week challenge with the Hershey Panthers.

The sting of that loss at Gibbon was quickly soothed when the Panthers came to the Cougars home field, as the Cougars, powered by a 147-yard night from senior running back Karson Sherman posted a 44-8 win over Hershey to improve to 2-1 on the young season.

The 44 points scored by the Cougars proved to be the first time a Sandy Creek team had eclipsed the 40-point mark since a 50-15 win over Superior on Oct. 2, 2015.

Freshman quarterback Ethan Shaw and senior receiver Micah Biltoft led off the Cougars scoring attack through the air, as both hit each other for one score in the opening 12 minutes of the game.

As the Sutton Mustangs opened the 2021 football season they had to figure out a way to replace eight key components to the successes of the 2020 team that went 8-2 and advanced to the Class C-2 state quarterfinal round. Sutton, in it’s typical control the game on the ground style, found the key components to fill the gaps with the losses of those eight players from a year ago, as seniors Paxton Olson and Matthew Davis rose to the occasion in a big way Friday night, as the two combined for 301 of Sutton’s 387 rushing yards. Sutton broke open a close game at Grand Island’s Memorial Stadium, where the Mustangs led Grand Island Central Catholic 14-7 at halftime. The halftime talk from the Sutton coaching staff erased a sluggish opening half of play, as the Mustangs outscored the Crusaders 23-0 in the second half to start the new season at 1-0. Olson’s night would produce 220 rushing yards in a workhorse-like fashion.

Shaw was three for 112 yards, while Lally chewed up 136 yards on the ground with Sherman adding 55 yards, as Sandy Creek out-gained the Warriors 309-29 in total offense. TORY DUNCAN | CLAY COUNTY NEWS

First game jitters played a big role in Sandy Creek’s season opening challenge on the gridiron, as the Cougars and their home field challenger Schuyler struggled to handle the ball and move the ball up the field.

Sandy Creek, however, did an about face at halftime, as the Cougars came out and broke open a scoreless game at the break to touch up the Warriors’ defense for eight points in the third quarter and 16 more in the fourth to open the season, for the third straight year, with a big win, cruising to 24-0.

Sandy Creek had to get several of it’s younger players into live game mode during the first half, including freshman quarterback Ethan Shaw. Once Shaw got into the flow of live action with Schuyler, the 5-7, 150-pound signal caller guided the Cougars to three scores in the final half of play.
