Centura, Centennial Hand Mustangs Pair of Losses

Fresh off their championship at the Freeman Holiday Tournament, the Sutton Mustangs looked to extend the winning streak that they had put together with games against Centura and Centennial.

Fillies Crush BDS, Centennial

With the much needed win over Centura under their belt, Sutton entertained the once beaten Bruning-Davenport/ Shickley girls Jan. 7, controlling the Lady Eagles to earn a huge 46-27 win. Friday night would send Sutton back into Southern Nebraska Conference play, where the Fillies earned a 27-point, 47-20 win over the Lady Broncos, improving the Fillies to 9-3.

SC Girls at 6-3 with Tourney Title

Coming into the 2015 Sandy Creek Holiday Tournament, the Lady Cougars found themselves on the heels of a two game winning streak. After a 37-19 first round win over Cross County in the tournament, the Lady Cougars reeled off two more wins, downing Milford, 52-40, in the second round, before taking down Central City, 44-40, in the championship game, to improve to 6-3 with the tournament title. A huge fourth quarter run against Milford would break open a close battle with Sandy Creek’s Southern Nebraska Conference counterpart, Milford.

Mustangs Improve to 4-4 with Freeman Title

Coming off the huge 67-62 double overtime win over Wood River, prior to the holiday break, the Sutton Mustangs seemingly kept their winning ways moving forward, as Sutton entered the Freeman Holiday Tournament in Adams last week. The Mustangs, behind a 15-4 fourth quarter run, downed the Thayer Central Titans, 49-27, to earn a spot with tournament host Freeman in the championship game. Sutton used another strong fourth quarter run, outscoring the Falcons 12-3, to gain a 35-27 win and improve to 4-4 on the year with the tournament championship.

Clay County Athletes in College

Four former Clay County student-athlete standouts are competing at the college level for three different universities and college’s this winter. Mikaela  Shaw, a 2013 graduate of Sandy  Creek High  School, is the  leading scorer and rebounder  for the 7-5 University  of Nebraska-Omaha Mavericks women’s  basketball team, thus far  into the 2015-16  season.

Rivera Earns 100th Career Win

Three Sutton wrestlers would run to a perfect 5-0 record on the mats, as the Mustangs hosted the annual Sutton Duals on Tuesday, Dec. 22. Ignacio Rivera, Armando Ochsner and Cameron Kleinschmidt all gained five wins in as many matches, as the Sutton grapplers earned second place team honors. They won four of five duals, with their lone loss of the day coming at the hands of the Wood River Eagles in the second round, falling to the Eagles 51-24. Sutton downed Cross County/Osceola 46-33 in the first round, then rolled over Weeping Water 60-18 in round three.

Fillies Roll Past St. Cecilia, Wood River

Coming off a tough set back at the hands of the top ranked team in Class C-1, Lincoln Christian, the Sutton Fillies were looking to right the ship and get back on the winning trail this past week with games at Hastings St. Cecilia and at home against Wood River. The ship certainly righted for the Fillies, as two huge wins came to the team, as the Fillies used a huge second half to down the defending Class C-2 state runner-up from a year ago, 57-45.

Sutton Boys Split with St. Cecilia, Wood River; Own 2-4 Record

Mustangs Come From Behind to Trip Eagles for Double Overtime Win

Contrasting games would see the Sutton Mustangs improve to 2-4 on the year, after a tough first two weeks on the hardwood. Hastings St. Cecilia’s hot handed squad would roll past the Mustangs on Friday, Dec. 18, with a 68-28 win for the preseason top ranked Bluehawks in the field of Class C-2 teams.

Heartland Runs Past Cardinals Dec. 8

The Harvard Cardinals fell to 0-3 on the year, as the Heartland Huskies, behind a fast paced offensive effort, ran past the Cardinals 78-37, Dec. 8. The first home game of the year for the Cardinals would see Heartland outscore Harvard 26-13 in the first quarter, hold a 43-25 halftime lead and outscore the Harvard crew 35- 12 in the second half to gain the win.

Lady Cards Fall to Heartland 53-23

The Heartland girls would be the first to knock the Harvard girls from the unbeaten ranks, as the Lady Huskies used a strong defensive effort to upend Harvard 53-23 Dec. 8, dropping the Lady Cardinals to 2-1 on the young season. Heartland jumped out to a 17-6 first quarter lead, then added a 9-3 second quarter run for a 26-9 halftime lead..
