Mustangs Tie for Fourth at Conference Meet

Powered by a double gold medal performance in the shot put and discus, the Sutton Mustangs finished in a two-way tie for fourth place during the 2016 Southern Nebraska Conference track and field championships Monday in Henderson. Garrett Clark scored 20 of the Mustangs’ 50 points in the meet with his winning efforts. Thayer Central dominated the meet, outscoring second place David City, 114-60, for the team title.

Lady Cougars Tie for Fourth at Superior

Led by a first place finish from sophomore Coree Lipovsky in the shot put and three more runnerup finishes by seniors Sadie and Hope Svoboda, as well as freshman Grace Messenger, the Sandy Creek girls track team placed fifth in the final team standings, scoring 62 team points at the Superior Invitational held April 19. Hastings St. Cecilia ran away with the team title, beating second place Superior by 101 team points, 181-80.

Traudt, Munoz Lead Cougar Golf Team at Home Meet

Jayden Traudt and Gabe Munoz led the Sandy Creek golf team in action on their home course, the Crooked Creek Country Club in Clay Center, as the two finished in the top 15, helping the Cougars place seventh in the final team standings of the Sandy Creek Invite. Traudt shot an 18-hole 87 to lead the Cougars, as he carded scores of 44 on the front nine and 43 on the back nine, placing him seventh overall in the final individual standings.

The Sutton Mustangs and Bluehawks of Hastings St. Cecilia again duked it out for team gold for the second straight week. Fresh off a 117-109 win over the Bluehawks at Sandy Creek April 5, Sutton’s margin of victory over St. Cecilia at the Heartland Invite in Henderson April 12, would fall to two-and-a-half points, with the Mustangs holding a 116.5-113 advantage to earn top team honors.

Senior’s Corbin Hansen and Grant Schiermeyer accounted for 24 individual team points and helped two relay teams add 12 more points. The Sandy Creek boys placed sixth as a team, scoring 41 points during the Sandy Creek Invitational held Tuesday, April 5. The Sutton Mustangs edged out second place Hastings St. Cecilia for the team title, as Sutton totaled 117 points, compared to 109 for the Bluehawks.

Mustangs Earn Team Gold at SC

A big boost from the 800 meter run, in which all three Sutton runners gained the top three spots, combined with a dominating win in the 1,600 meter relay and 16 points from senior Garrett Clark in the throws, would finally put the Sutton Mustangs on top during action at the Sandy Creek Invitational held April 5. With strong efforts throughout the day, Sutton held off second place Hastings St. Cecilia to win team gold for the first time this season.

Mustangs Second at Thayer Central

With the 2016 track season taking a little forced break with the cancellation of the Sutton Relays, that were to be held March 24, the Mustangs finally got back into action following a second place finish at the Doane Indoor meet held March 18 in Crete. The Mustangs headed south this past Thursday, March 31, for action at the Thayer Central Invite in Hebron.

Lady Cardinals Fourth at Thayer Central Invitational

The Harvard girls track team had a stellar day of action on the track and in the field during the Thayer Central Invitational held in Hebron March 31. The Lady Cardinals earned fourth place honors as a team, scoring 50 points, trailing only that of team champion Johnson County Central, who topped the team race with 99 points. Fillmore Central scored 97.33 points, while third place Tri County gained 75 team points. The scoring began in the field events for the Harvard girls, as seniors Cassie Roberts and McKenna Schuck combined to score 14 team points in the field events.
