Crumbliss to play in 62nd annual Shrine Bowl

Sandy Creek senior Connor Crumbliss has been invited to be a part of the 62nd Annual Nebraska Shrine Bowl, where the Cougar standout will play for the South squad in the event, slated to begin at 2 p.m., Saturday, July 11, at the University of Kearney campus at Ron and Carol Cope Stadium Foster Field.

Crumbliss is the first Sandy Creek player to be invited to play in the game since 1996, when Simon Van Voening played.

A year before Van Voening played, Brian Shaw, a 1995 graduate of Sandy Creek, played in the contest.

Sutton Juniors take two in Fairfield

For the second straight week, the Sutton Post 61 Junior Legion baseball team earned a pair of wins over Fairfield’s Post 256 Juniors, this time in Fairfield.

Sutton upended Fairfield 12-2 and 16-8 on June 18 in Sutton, and five days later, the Post 61 crew took wins of 13-5 and 9-4 while playing on the home field of Post 256 in Fairfield.

Game one of the doubleheader would see Sutton jump out to an early 9-0 lead after two and a half innings of play, before Fairfield posted two runs in the bottom of the third to set the game at a 9-2 Sutton advantage.

Fairfield Seniors fall in opener at Wilber Friday night

A tough season-opening bout at Wilber left the Fairfield Seniors short of a win, as the host Wilber Seniors gained an 8-0 win in action Friday, June 19, with Fairfield falling to 0-1 with the loss.

Rodney McDonald picked up the lone hit of the night for Fairfield, as Wilber outhit the guys in blue and gray 6-1.

Sutton Juniors trip up Fairfield in Clay County doubleheader

Baseball season is back, despite being shortened due to COVID-19. Two Clay County teams battled it out on the diamond, as the Sutton Post 61 Juniors hosted the Fairfield Post 256 Juniors at Sutton’s DLD Park Thursday, June 18.

Sutton would claim the doubleheader over Fairfield, earning a 12-2 first game win, while ending the night in game two with a 16-8 win to start the season at 2-0, while Fairfield fell to 0-2.

Game one would see Sutton outhit Fairfield 9-1 and gain eight runs batted in to gain the 10-run win.

The game was a tight battle through four innings, as Sutton outscored Fairfield 4-1 through four innings, and then took a 6-1 lead after the fifth frame before a 6-1 scoring spree in the sixth inning sealed the 12-2 win.
