Junior Tyler Baldwin cashes in for two of his seven points over the top of Lincoln Christian 6’ 11” sophomore Easton Marshbanks, helping the Mustangs improve to 2-1 with the 62-45 win.

Following a first week, nine-point loss to the Kearney Catholic Stars, a game that would see the Sutton Mustangs trail the Stars 39-38 going into the final quarter, only to have their legs come out from under them to be outscored 12-4 in the final eight minutes. The Mustangs, who had less than five full practices going into the game in Kearney, found their basketball legs this past week to pick up two road wins, downing Heartland Dec. 10, 66-54, before heading to Lincoln to take a big 62-45 win from Lincoln Christian, the pre-season sixth ranked team in Class C-1.

Tuesday’s trip to Henderson and the Mustangs opening Southern Nebraska Conference game would see Sutton jump to a quick start, outscoring the Huskies 17-9 and 16-6 in the first two quarters for a 33-15 halftime lead.

The Huskies and Mustangs both heated up in the third quarter, as Sutton held a 23-20 scoring edge in the third, to take a 56-35 lead going into the final quarter.

Cory Carlson (23) and Joe Hinrichs work together to bring down an Oakland-Craig Knight. Moving in on the play for Sutton is Maury Bautista (16).

Work ethic. That is what Sutton Head Football Coach Steve Ramer shared after the Sutton Mustangs fell short of the ultimate goal, the Class C2 State Championship Tuesday afternoon at Memorial Stadium in Lincoln.

“I tell you what, I couldn’t be more proud of our kids. The way they battled and worked their tails off to get where we finished today,” Ramer said. “Sure, a state title would have been great, but these kids have nothing to hang their heads about.”

Sutton, for the first time in 2019, was held scoreless in a game that was dictated by Mother Nature and challenging defenses on the part of both teams Tuesday afternoon.
