Sutton senior Kyle Baumert played a key role in the start of Sutton’s second half scoring explosion, hitting five key points in the third quarter to help Sutton earn a 62-47 win over Centennial for the Southern Nebraska Conference tournament championship. Coming off a sweet revenge 71-60 win over the Milford Eagles in the semifinals of the Southern Nebraska Conference, the task at hand for the Sutton Mustangs wasn’t quite finished, as to reach the top of the hill in the conference tournament, Sutton would have to beat the 17-1 Centennial Broncos on their home floor Saturday night in Utica.

The Broncos, who already had claim to a home win over Sutton, a 53-45 win on Jan. 4, rolled into the championship finals with Sutton with a dominating 62-33 win over Wilber-Clatonia in the other semifinal bout Feb. 3.

The two teams, no strangers to each other, battled evenly in the first 16 minutes of play Saturday night in Utica, as the host Broncos held a narrow 24-22 halftime lead.

Senior Lee Carlson improved to 37-0 with a 6-3 win over Thayer Central’s Keegan Casey in this title bout at the Southern Nebraska Conference wrestling meet in Hebron Saturday. Carlson will be going for his 150th career win this Saturday in Bartley at the Southwest Invitational.

Eight total medalists would be led by Sutton senior Lee Carlson’s Southern Nebraska Conference individual title in the 126-pound class, as the Mustangs headed to Thayer Central High School for the 2019 SNC championships Saturday.

The Mustangs totaled 127 team points to gain a fourthplace finish as a team. David City ran away with the team title, outscoring the host Titans, 203-145.5, as the Scouts won their eighth straight SNC title in Hebron. Milford edged Sutton 130-127 for third place in the meet.

Lee Carlson’s pair of wins in Hebron led the senior to a 37-0 record, as Carlson, after a first round bye, beat a pair of strong challengers, outscoring David City’s Clayton Harris 8-2 in the semifinals, before gaining a 6-3 win over Thayer Central’s Keegan Casey for the weight class title.

Four other Mustangs would gain runner-up finishes for Sutton.

Sutton runs past Cougars 66-39

In the annual Clay County hardwood challenge between the Sandy Creek Cougars and Sutton Mustangs, the Mustangs would use an 11-point first half run and a 16-point second half edge to gain a 27-point, 66-39 win over the Cougars to improve to 15-1 on the year, while Sandy Creek fell to 2-12 with the loss.

Sutton held leads of 16-10 at the end of the first quarter and 34-23 at the half, before outscoring Sandy Creek 32-16 in the second half to gain the win.

Cade Wiseman and Jordan Davis paced Sutton’s offensive attack with 12 and 10 points, respectively, while Sandy Creek’s Wyatt Mach led all scorers with 21 points.

Sutton hit on 45.5 percent of their shots from the floor, making 25 of 55 shots, while Sandy Creek was 12-37 from the floor (32.4%).

Fillies back on track

After a long and tough six-game losing streak, that dated back to a 53-31 loss to Aquinas Catholic in the finals of the David City Holiday Tournament, the Sutton Fillies found their groove on the court this past week, winning three straight games, with a pair of road wins and a big home win.

Sutton broke a 27-27 tie with Ravenna at the end of the third quarter and used a 16-10 fourth quarter rally to down the Bluejays, 43-37, to end the six-game skid and would go on to trip up Fairbury, 36-33, on the road and return home to dominate the Heartland Huskies, 52-37, to improve to 7-9 on the year.

Sutton moves to 14-1

The Sutton Mustangs ran their season record to 14-1 with a trio of big wins, extending their current winning streak to five games, as the Mustangs steamrolled the Ravenna Bluejays 92-45, and gained a pair of Southern Nebraska Conference wins over Fairbury and Heartland, beating the Jeffs, 47-22, and the Huskies, 66-21.

A trip to Ravenna would see 11 Mustangs score in the dismantling of the Jays, with Jordan Davis and Jacob Haight leading the way with 17 points each, while Quenton Jones and Garrett Nuss added 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Cougars sink Thayer Central 62-58 for 2nd win of the season

A big night from four Cougars would guide the Sandy Creek Cougars to their second win of the 2018-19 basketball season, as Wyatt Mach, with 27 points, along with 13 points from Josh Shaw and 10 points each from Conner Crumbliss and Micah Biltoft, helped Sandy Creek to a 62-58 win over Thayer Central in Southern Nebraska Conference action, Thursday, Jan. 17.

The two teams battled evenly throughout the game, as they opened with an 18-18 tie after one quarter of play, and with an 11-10 run in the second. Sandy Creek held a narrow 29-28 halftime lead.

Second half action led the Cougars to a 33-30 scoring edge to claim the four-point win and improve to 2-11 on the year.

Hansen, Medina earn hardware at Bill Foster Invite in Gibbon

Dalton Hansen garnered the top prize in the 106-pound class at the Gibbon Invite Saturday to improve to 17-6 on the year. Here, Hansen battles with Zachary Dickau of Elwood to gain an eventual 4-1 win to spark Hansen to the individual title.

After taking on the field at the always, tough High Plains Community Invite in Columbus on Jan. 4-5, the Harvard Cardinals’ wrestling team would head west for action on the mats in Gibbon at the Bill Foster-Gibbon Invite on Saturday, Jan. 12.

Dalton Hansen and Oscar Medina returned from Gibbon after strong performances that would gain Hansen the 106-pound title, while Medina would win three of four matches to place third in the 113-pound class.

In all, Havard tallied 52 team points. Ord captured team gold, winning the meet over Thayer Central, 169.5-163.5.

Hansen’s win in the 106-pound class would run his season record to 17-6. He opened with a 4-1 win over 23-8 Zachary Dikau of Elwood, before advancing to the finals with a 7-3 win over Ein Obermiller of the Grand Island reserves.

Mustangs claim Shelton title

Fresh off of their runner-up finish at the Superior Invitational on Friday, Jan. 11, the Sutton Mustangs hit the road this past Saturday to challenge the field at the Shelton Invite.

After falling short of Smith Center, KS at the Superior meet, Sutton, behind the fact that they had seven individual champions at Shelton, rolled past second place Arapahoe, 182-150, to claim the team title.

Unbeaten Lee Carlson kicked off the title winning gold medal performances, as Carlson, who owns a 30-0 record and is the top ranked Class C wrestler in the 126-pound class, pinned his way to the weight class title in Shelton.

Carlson pinned Sam Morales of Shelton in 42 seconds, pinned Arapahoe’s Shane Sieja in 2:15 and pinned Carson Mason of South Loup in his third match in 2:17.

SCUD students begin classes in NCAPS addition

Students at South Central Unified returned to school after the Christmas break with a new set-up for their classrooms. The recently-opened addition to Sandy Creek campus was fully experienced by students on their first day back for the new year, offering open classroom styles, much like those found in a college setting.

Cardinals roll past Warriors, fall to Kenesaw Blue Devils

Harvard earned a huge win over Red Cloud Jan. 4, taking the 40-point win, before falling to Kenesaw, 63-28, Jan. 5, leaving the team at 6-3 on the season.

Harvard’s gymnasium was filled with the sounds of intense pounding throughout the first quarter, as the Cardinals and Warriors consistently fought for the ball, resulting in several turnovers and pushing the boys in a constant run up and down the court.

Despite Red Cloud’s urgency to grab and sink the ball, the Cardinals used runs of 10-0 and 20-6 in the first half to secure their strong lead. Adding to Harvard’s handle of the ball were 30 rebounds; rebound leaders were Noah Okraska with eight, and David Reazola and Steve Brand with five each.

Going into the second half, Harvard’s advancement in points showed, as the team posted 15 points in the third, compared to Red Cloud’s five.
