Mustangs end 2018 season at 10-2

BY TORY DUNCAN

The bitter cold temperatures during Friday nights C-2 semifinal playoff bout between the Sutton Mustangs and Norfolk Catholic Knights did very little to slow down the potent 1-2 running back punch from the Knights, as Norfolk Catholic bulled their way into the Nov. 20 Class C-2 state championship game with Centennial, earning a 50-28 win over the host Mustangs.

The “feels like” temperature flirted with the lower single digits, but despite the bone chilling cold, senior all-state running back Dylan Kautz, along with running mates, senior Evan Smith punished the Mustangs for 387 combined rushing yards, which accounted for all but one rushing yard for the Knights.

Article Image Alt Text

Sutton’s football Mustangs put together one of their biggest performances of the season this past Friday night in David City, as the Mustangs, behind powerful offensive and defensive line play, and a record setting rushing night for senior Brett Simonsen, barreled through the Monarchs of Aquinas Catholic 46- 21 in the quarterfinal round of the Class C-2 playoffs. Cards route Cowboys 70-37

Article Image Alt Text

BY ASHLEY D. SWANSON

Prior to the third consecutive battle between Harvard and Cody-Kilgore, Head Coach Scott Trimble felt confident in his team, “I feel like we had a good week of preparation. The guys are pretty focused on what they need to do,” he said. “In three years of six-man football, the field we’ve played on the most besides our own is this one, so I think we feel right at home and we’re ready to go.” Although the Cardinals secured a 33-point win over the Cowboys, the first quarter started out rocky for Harvard, with a back-andforth of touchdowns and faulty plays. C-K pushed forward quickly, after successfully grabbing the kickoff from Harvard, making their first touchdown at the 8:53 mark; with a poor kick, the scoreboard read 6-0, C-K up.

Mustang defense plays big

Sutton improves to 9-1 with 22-7 win over Battle Creek in C-2 opener

BY TORY DUNCAN

It didn’t take long to figure out that the opening round of the Class C-2 state football playoffs was going to be an old fashion battle out by the woodshed when the 14th seed, Battle Creek Braves, showed up to challenge third seeded Sutton Oct. 26.

Sutton’s defense would be the difference maker in a 22-7 win over the Braves, as three interceptions to stop three strong Battle Creek drives by Cade Wiseman, Dusty Stone and Jordan Davis, along with a monster night from the Mustang defensive line and line-backing group, held the Braves to a mere 99 rushing yards and 87 passing yards in the Mustangs 15-point win.
