Deweese native and 2016 Sandy Creek graduate Corbin Hansen led the University of Nebraska-Kearney men’s cross country team in the NCAA Central Region meet, hosted Nov. 17 in Joplin, MO.

In doing so, Hansen, a junior on the Lopers roster, will be the lone UNK mens runner to advance to the national championships in Pittsburgh, PA on Saturday, Dec. 1.

The Sutton Mustangs, with their run into the C-2 state semifinals, have had 16 players honored by the coaches of the C2-5 football district this year, while the Sandy Creek Cougars placed eight players on the post-season honors list.

First team selections for the district championship team, Sutton, include offensely: Jackson Perrien, quarterback, Brett Simonsen, running back, as well as Garrett Nuss and Braden Peterworth on the offensive line. On defense: James Griess, linebacker, Tyler Ohrman, defensive line and Seth George, defensive end.

Joel Shuck, Connor Crumbliss and Josh Shaw were honored as first team selections for the Cougars. Shuck as a lineman, Crumbliss as a quarterback/defensive back and Shaw as a lineman.

Mustangs end 2018 season at 10-2

The bitter cold temperatures during Friday nights C-2 semifinal playoff bout between the Sutton Mustangs and Norfolk Catholic Knights did very little to slow down the potent 1-2 running back punch from the Knights, as Norfolk Catholic bulled their way into the Nov. 20 Class C-2 state championship game with Centennial, earning a 50-28 win over the host Mustangs.

The “feels like” temperature flirted with the lower single digits, but despite the bone chilling cold, senior all-state running back Dylan Kautz, along with running mates, senior Evan Smith punished the Mustangs for 387 combined rushing yards, which accounted for all but one rushing yard for the Knights.

Wilcox-Hildreth standout Jenkins rolls up 478 total yards ending Harvard’s football season at 10-1

Back and forth was the name of the game during the first half of the Harvard versus Wilcox-Hildreth semifinal round of the D-6 state playoffs Friday night in Harvard. It is, however, where the Cardinals would end the 2018 football season with a 63-50 loss to the Falcons. W-H took the opening kickoff from Harvard and marched to the opening touchdown at the 9:04 mark of the first quarter, opening the game with a 6-0 lead after a failed extra-point kick.

W-H senior AJ Jenkins tore up the Harvard turf in the Falcons win, rolling up 354 rushing yards and passing for another 113 yards, as Jenkins accounted for 478 of the Falcons’ 559 total offensive yards on the night. Jenkins also grabbed one pass for 11 yards and scored nine of Wilcox-Hildreth’s 10 touchdowns in the 13-point win for the Falcons.

The season for the Sutton Fillies and Sandy Creek Cougars came to a close Monday night for both teams in action at the C2-3 Sub-District tournament, hosted by Adams Central High School, west of Hastings.

Sutton, however, would rebound from a three set loss to Sandy Creek just a week ago, as the Fillies, before a straight sets, 25-9, 25-14, 25-21 loss to second ranked and top seed Superior, would avenge a 25-23, 20-25, 17-25 loss to the Cougars on Oct. 23 and take down the Cougars 25-16, 25-15, 19-25, 25-21, to advance to the bout with Superior Monday night.

Sutton improves to 9-1 with 22-7 win over Battle Creek in C-2 opener

It didn’t take long to figure out that the opening round of the Class C-2 state football playoffs was going to be an old fashion battle out by the woodshed when the 14th seed, Battle Creek Braves, showed up to challenge third seeded Sutton Oct. 26.

Sutton’s defense would be the difference maker in a 22-7 win over the Braves, as three interceptions to stop three strong Battle Creek drives by Cade Wiseman, Dusty Stone and Jordan Davis, along with a monster night from the Mustang defensive line and line-backing group, held the Braves to a mere 99 rushing yards and 87 passing yards in the Mustangs 15-point win.
