The challenges of a tough season

Winter sports is quickly drawing to a close, which on one hand is not a bad thing, as on the positive side, maybe that means winter weather will soon make way for spring.

It’s always a rat race at the end, and as Jordyn and I head to games Tuesday night, one at Grand Island Central Catholic and the other at Centennial High School, I reflect on some things that I soaked in over the winter season.

Farm Bureau participates in ag reading program

Through the Nebraska Farm Bureau Foundation’s Agriculture Reading Hour Program, Lisa Griess, office assistant for Clay County Farm Bureau, volunteered to read the agriculture-themed book to Mrs. Schmer’s kindergarten class at Sutton Public School.

The program, which was funded through a grant from Farm Credit Services of America, aims to engage agricultural volunteers in their communities to read an accurate agriculture-themed book to youth in their communities.

SCNUSD #5 accepts Gilson’s resignation

The South Central Nebraska Unified Board of Education accepted the resignation of Superintendent Randall Gilson effective June 29, 2018.

 Amid jokes of changing the date to 2019, the board unanimously accepted the resignation letter.

County Shooting Sports still exciting 29 years later

With 29 years of teaching kids archery and gun safety under their belts, David Woods and Wayne Peshek are still enjoying seeing the kids accomplish new goals during the six weeks of Marksman Club as part of the County’s 4-H program.

“Seeing the satisfaction on the kids’ face is what does it for me,” Peshek said. “Seeing the kids smile when they come off the line is what gives me the satisfaction to keep this going.”

Fillies earn second win of season

In the final set of regular season games for the 2017-18 season, the Sutton Fillies earned their second win of the season in a two-game split, with Wilber-Clatonia and Fillmore Central, to improve to 2-19 on the season, as the Fillies headed into sub-district play this past Monday night.

Sutton took down the Wilber-Clatonia girls in a convincing way, clobbering the Wolverines by 38 points in a 56-18 win, before Fillmore Central gained a 42-35 win over Sutton in the regular-season finale Friday, Feb. 9.

Red Raiders qualify 5

The South Central Red Raiders finished third as a team and qualified five wrestlers at the Class C-1 District wrestling meet hosted at Malcolm Friday and Saturday.

Freshman Tobey Turman, 106; freshman Rodney McDonald, 113; junior Chase DeVries, 126; senior Colt Rademacher, 195; and senior Hunter Rempe, 285, all qualified for the state tournament in Omaha beginning Thursday, Feb. 15.

A big week for county wrestlers

Well, for the ninth straight year, I embark on the trek to Omaha to follow Clay County wrestlers that have qualified for the Nebraska State Wrestling Championships at Omaha’s CenturyLink Center.

The state meet, which runs this Thursday, Friday and Saturday, will feature 11 county grapplers, including five from the South Central Unified squad for Sandy Creek and Lawrence-Nelson. Sutton will send four matmen to the big show, while Harvard advanced two out of the D-3 District meet in Elm Creek.

Harvard Council approves mayor, councilman resignations

In two special meetings Jan. 30 and 31, the Harvard City Council accepted two resignations and voted in two new council members.

On Jan. 30, council members approved the resignation of council member Mike Lambert, for Ward 1, while on Jan. 31, the council accepted the resignation of Mayor Michael Boyd.
