Penalty for trafficking rises

Article Image Alt Text

BY ASHLEY D. SWANSON

Slavery. Trafficking. Although the two words are spelled differently, according to the Nebraska Family Alliance, human trafficking has become the modern-day slavery. As reported by the Human Trafficking Initiative, which is supported by the Women’s Fund of Omaha, more than 900 people in Nebraska alone are being trafficked for sex, often multiple times a week.

The report also states, “the state [Nebraska] has an active online commercial sex market, where individuals are advertised a minimum of once a week.”

Understanding introverts

By Ashley D. Swanson

The sound of musicals can be heard throughout the house; there’s singing going along with it. There are two people, each one doing their own activity, and minus some slight talking, the two are not really conversing with each other.

That’s pretty much how introverts hang out...at least, that’s how Jenna and I hang out, and fun fact, we’re perfectly fine with it.

Social media communication gets missed

By Tory Duncan

Sometimes when you get involved, you get too involved! I’ve found this to be true with myself over the past eight and a half years since moving to Clay County.

When I moved here and started as Managing Editor of the Clay County News in June 2009, I told myself to get involved, so I did. I’ve been through the run of the Sutton Chamber, I’ve been involved with the Sutton Community Home Board, the Sutton Community Home Foundation Board, Clay County’s Emergency Management Board, and I’ve been involved with the Sutton Planning and Zoning Board, to name other committees and boards.

Weed, disease, insect guides available

By Brandy VanDeWalle

One of the best publications that Nebraska Extension releases each year for farmers and ranchers is the Weed, Disease and Insect Guide. This annual publication provides producers the latest product information and strategies for effectively managing pests. A recent CropWatch article highlighted this guide, which I’ve included in my column this week.

The 332-page guide offers a single, comprehensive resource for your pest management challenges. It is written by Nebraska Extension specialists in agronomy and weed science, plant pathology and entomology, who offer pesticide rate, efficacy, and application notes based on Nebraska conditions and research. It also offers a range of tools to aid in pest management, from a guide to herbicide classifications to an applicator nozzle and spray droplet classification to photo guides of common diseases, insects and weeds.
