Lady Cougars drop 3 road games

The Cougars went 0-3 last week, losing to the St. Cecilia Bluehawks, 55-36, Tuesday, Jan. 2; defeating the Ashland-Greenwood Bluejays, 40-19, Thursday, Jan. 4; and narrowly losing 38-35 against the St. Paul Wildcats Friday, Jan. 5, and are now 4-8 on the season.

Against St. Cecilia, senior Kenzie Turman led the team with 23 of the team’s 36 points, making 9 of 23 field goals. She connected on the team’s five 3-pointers. Turman also handed out a team-high three assists, while leading the team with four steals.

Red Cloud, Kenesaw take wins over Lady Cardinals

Two more losses have been added to the Harvard Lady Cardinals’ record, leaving them at 2-11 on the season.

Friday, Jan. 5, the Lady Cardinals traveled to Red Cloud to take on the Lady Warriors.

Master Gardener training set for Feb. 6-March 28

Do you love spending your time outside during the spring and summer months? Do you love to garden? As we dream of warmer weather, we begin to think about planting our gardens and taking care of our lawns. If you are the type of individual who loves to garden and volunteer, the master gardener training is just what you need.

The Nebraska Master Gardener program is a horticulture related volunteer training program based in many counties throughout the state. It has been part of University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension since 1976.

Learning to live with a 15-year-old

Before my 15-yearold cousin Loetta came to live with me, I did not have a designated cheese drawer in the fridge. I had a drawer with all the sandwich makings in it, but I didn’t have just a drawer full of nothing but cheese.

That’s just one small part of my life that has changed since she’s come to live with me, and let me tell you, quite a bit has changed. Nothing for the worse, but I’ve definitely had my perspective switched around in the short time she’s been here.

The passing of two men of men

In a world where we all face our own end at some point, this past week Clay County, as a whole, along with the communities of Edgar and Sutton lost two class-act men from this world.

Bob Rose and Gene Bauer were men of high character and pride within themselves, with their family and with anyone that had the honor and privilege to have had conversations with either one of these giant hearts know exactly what I’m talking about.

Clay County receives first snowfall of season

For the most part, the winter season until Dec. 24 was without much moisture and temperatures stayed reasonably high for the usually cold season.

Sunday, Dec. 24, Clay County saw the first measurable snowfall of the season, with an average of four inches falling. Temperatures plummeted with the snowfall, with the maximum temperature reaching 24 degrees, Dec. 24, and dropping to 15 as the day went on.

Dec. 25 and 26 temperatures dropped into the lower teens, keeping at a steady 13 degrees at max, with a 6 and 4 found on the thermometer as a minimum, respectively.

SPS plans community meeting for Jan. 9

The Sutton Public Schools Board of Education has scheduled a community meeting for Tuesday, Jan. 9, in the high school library.

This community discussion, which will go from 5:30-7 p.m., is part of a larger Strategic Planning process and will give the Board of Education and district administration the opportunity to listen to community stakeholders. The results will help formulate a vision of the future, and identify goals and strategies necessary to move the district forward to meet the challenges of the 21st century.
