Good news for the economy

When the calendar flips to November, it is inspiring to see communities throughout the Third District host ceremonies and parades to honor the Nebraskans who have served our country. In Congress, we are focused on demonstrating the gratitude of a nation by ensuring our veterans, the men and women currently serving, and their families receive the care and recognition they deserve.

Nebraska Congressman Don Bacon has introduced the Gold Star Family Support and Installation Access Act to strengthen our commitment to the loved ones of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

We must build a culture of respect

Ugly stories about harassment, intimidation and bullying have been in the news nearly every day for more than two months now. The stories are alarming – yet they need to be told to pull back the curtain on a very big problem and to begin to address the problem.

These stories, along with the remarkable #MeToo social media campaign, have increased awareness and provided a platform for change. Now, we need a commitment to education and prevention for the future.

Winter drought - prevent ‘Invisible’ plant damage

When we think of droughts we often think of soaring heat, lack of rainfall and summer. We never stop and think that a drought can happen anytime of the year in any season.

Winter droughts do as much damage, maybe even more, as summer droughts. This is because we tend to not think about our landscape plants needing any water during late fall and winter.

Sutton Council approves office appointments Monday

The reappointment of Larry T. Nuss as council president, along with the reappointment of Don Bottorf as city attorney, Sherrie Bartell as city clerk and Tracey Landenberger as the Sutton police chief, opened the Dec. 11 Sutton City Council meeting.

Additionally, council members reappointed Steve Parr of JEO Consulting as the city street superintendent for another year.

In times of sorrow and darkness, Candace Olson and Lori McCroden decided to spread some hope and support for those dealing with tragedy. “We’ve seen a lot of negative feedback online in Clay County from when they found the body here. We wanted to show the Loofe family that there are strong hearts in Clay County that care for what they are going through,” McCroden said.

Carlson, Hinrichs earn titles, remain unbeaten for Sutton wrestling team

Sutton junior Lee Carlson and freshman Joe Hinrichs kept their unbeaten string alive during action at the always-challenging Wood River Invitational, Friday, Dec. 8.

Carlson and Hinrichs led a group of seven medalists on the day, as the Mustangs finished third in the final team standings, scoring 140 points in all. Aquinas Catholic of David City held off second place Ord by one point, 201-200, to win the team title.

Red Raiders win Southern Valley Invite

Rempe, Rademacher earn individual gold, eight bring home hardware

Seniors Hunter Rempe and Colt Rademacher led a group of eight South Central medalists in action at the Southern Valley Invitational, Friday, Dec. 8. Rempe claimed gold in the 285-pound weight class with five pins to account for 34 of the Red Raiders 180 team points, while Rademacher tallied another 29 team points, with five wins in the 195-pound weight class, as the two Red Raider seniors helped South Central to the team title, outlasting second place Centura by five team points, outscoring the Centurions 180-175 for the win.
