A German Tale: Fleeing Russians for the safety of America

Article Image Alt Text

BY ASHLEY D. SWANSON

When Elfi Gartzke was just 4 years old, she learned how fast life can change. Growing up, she explained she had a wonderful life. Elfi resided on an acreage in Schneidemuhl, Germany, with her mother, father, three brothers, grandparents, aunt, and cousin.

They would swim in the river near their home and pick berries from the forest. They would play with the animals on the acreage. They did all of this until December 1944 when Elfi’s father was drafted as a German solider. It was uncommon for older men with families to be drafted, but at this time, there was no age limit. Elfi explained that boys as young as 12 were being drafted into the war.

Centennial wins C2-5 district crown with fourth quarter comeback over Sutton

BY TORY DUNCAN

Three key fumbles, along with nearly 100 yards in penalties doomed the Sutton Mustangs Friday, Oct. 20, as a road trip to Utica to challenge the unbeaten Centennial Broncos would see a fourth quarter rally by the Broncos. Fueled by a key fumble by the Mustangs, the Broncos would outscore Sutton 14-0 in the final 12 minutes to give Centennial a 20-12 win over the Mustangs.

The win secured Centennial’s second straight C2-5 district title, as the Broncos improved to 9-0 on the year, while Sutton ends the regular season at 7-2.

Halloween is the best time of year

By Ashley D. Swanson

Do you realize what next Tuesday is?? It’s HALLOWEEN! Halloween is by far my favorite holiday.

I love being able to dress up in costumes and look like someone (or something) else for a while.

I love the scary stories, the apple cider, the pumpkins, the decorations, the makeup ideas, the candy corn (yes, I love candy corn)....just everything, I love everything about it!
