Cougars fall in tough game at Fillmore Central

Article Image Alt Text

BY JORDYN HULINSKY

A low-scoring battle resulted in Sandy Creek’s second loss of the season, as the Cougars dropped a 7-0 decision to the Panthers of Fillmore Central in Geneva Friday.

Sandy Creek kicked off to start the bout and took over offensively, following a three-an-out drive by the Panthers. But the Cougars responded in the same manner, three-and-out, giving the ball back to Fillmore Central, as the Panthers on a drive that moved the chains for three first downs in eight plays before punting it away.

My cup runneth over

By Ashley Swanson

There are not enough words in the world to describe how amazing Thursday evening through Monday afternoon was.

One of my best friends was set to marry the love of her life this Saturday, and I was honored to be called her maid of honor at their wedding.

I got to Norfolk Thursday evening just in time to see Teri (bride) and Adi (bridesmaid) arrive. After Teri had a makeup run-through, we got all fancy and set out on the town for Teri’s bachelorette party.

By Tory Duncan

Many of you understand that often times we get information in the form of “press releases.” Information that is “fed” to Nebraska newspapers that once in a great while, really stands out when I receive them.

I received an emailed release from the Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources (IANR) on Aug. 22, related to a rural poll that talked about the decline of support for our small-town grocery stores.

Poll shows rural Nebraskans are skirting local grocery stores

Lincoln, NE, Aug. 22— Nearly half of rural Nebraskans are bypassing their local grocery stores to buy their food at supercenters and supermarkets, according to the 2017 Nebraska Rural Poll.

Local grocery stores maintain market share in communities that are large enough for them to be viable but too small to be major markets. Yet almost three in 10 residents of those places do most of their food shopping at supercenters or big-box retailers, the poll shows.

Clay County to feel full effects of eclipse Aug. 21

In less than a week, thousands of people from near and far will be looking to the sky for a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, as a total solar eclipse crosses the United States.

On Monday, Aug. 21, the solar eclipse will cross over Clay County around 1 p.m. (times will vary depending on town).

This is the first total solar eclipse to cross the United States from coast-to-coast since June 8, 1918. This will also be the last solar eclipse to cross over the county until 2106, making it a true once-ina- lifetime event for hundreds in the area.

Communities throughout the county, including Sutton and the Harvard and Sandy Creek School districts, have events planned from the start of the partial phase, until totality starts.

Sutton Council implements recreational use hours

In an effort to reduce city vandalism that has taken place in recent months at cityowned recreational areas, the Sutton City Council instituted an administrative order, allowing the city to implement a curfew in all city-owned park properties during their August meeting held Monday, Aug. 14.

Under the advisement of City Attorney Don Bottorf, council members approved the administrative order that will place in effect recreational use hours in all city owned recreational areas from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., each day.

These new hours will take affect immediately, with signs being posted at each main entrance to all city-owned recreational properties.
