Remembering a number

ByTory Duncan

Some of you might think, after the last couple of weeks, that I’m losing my mind a little bit. Last week, I wrote about Oscar Madison, comparing myself to him in regards to my cleanliness. This week, actually last Tuesday night after we put the county fair issue to bed, I found my mind drifting off to the old days way before cell phones, smartphones, flip phones, maybe even dumb phones, to the days when all of us had so many phone numbers locked up in our head.

Project SENSE demo day to feature high tech sensors in action

Article Image Alt Text

A Project SENSE lunch and learn session is planned for Friday, Aug. 4, in Hebron, NE. Growers will learn how to outfit and implement the project’s nitrogen management strategy on their operations. Project SENSE (Sensors for Efficient Nitrogen Use and Stewardship of the Environment) focuses on improving the efficiency of nitrogen fertilizer use.

Strategies which detect crop nitrogen status at early growth stages are a promising way to improve nitrogen fertilizerefficiency and improve groundwater nitrate levels. Growers will see a live demonstration of the project’s high clearance nitrogen applicator outfitted with active crop canopy sensors and will see the high tech sensors in action. Results from the prior two years will be shared.

Sutton Juniors to state

Tale of two games between Post 61 and Wilber gives Sutton two wins, trip to state tourney

The Sutton Junior Legion baseball team faced a huge uphill climb to earn their second straight trip to the Class C state championship tournament, needing to earn two wins over the Wilber Juniors Tuesday night at DLD Park.

The tale of two games, however, would make that dream possible for the Post 61 crew, as Sutton came from behind in game one with one run in each of the sixth, seventh and eighth innings, to steal a dog fight battle with Wilber, 4-3.

Pitching troubles hampered the top seeded Wilber crew in game two, to the tune of 10 walks, while Sutton took full advantage of the Wilber pitching woes, scoring seven runs in the second inning and combining for eight more runs in the final four innings of a six inning affair, to gain the 10-run, 15-5 win over Wilber. Sutton punched their ticket to state, which begins this Saturday in St. Paul.

A grand champion fair experience

by Brandy VanDeWalle

As I write this, the Clay County Fair is in full-swing and the Fillmore County Fair is about to begin, so this article highlights some interesting findings about what youth enjoy the most during a county fair experience.

Every county fair provides 4-H youth across the state with an opportunity to showcase the project work that they have completed throughout the year and to receive recognition for their efforts.

Model rockets that have been assembled from basic materials, cookies that will make your mouth water, sheep that are sheared for the big show, and many other exhibits can most likely be seen at your local county fair.

Head, Heart, Hands & Health...the 4-H way

by Tory Duncan

To whom it may concern: After nine years of covering the Clay County Fair, it remains one of my most favorite events each year! End of statement!

In all seriousness, what other event, as I have clearly shared over these past eight full years, do you bring the entire county together as one, with one common theme?

As the 4-H Pledge reads: “I pledge my head to clearer thinking, my heart to greater loyalty, my hands to larger service, and my health to better living, for my club, my community, my country and my world.”
