Three families earn Pioneer Farm Family honors

Three Clay County families will be receiving the Nebraska Pioneer Farm Award Saturday, July 8, at 6:15 p.m., during the Clay County Fair. The Pioneer Farm Award is given to farm families who have consecutively held ownership of land in the same family for at least a 100 years. Those to be honored in the county include LaVerne and Shirley Yost of Harvard; David and Ann Kauk of Saronville; and Stanley R. Koehler of Harvard.

LAVERNE & SHIRLEY YOST

Henry G. Yost served as the 100-yearold farm’s original owner, filing the farm on Sept. 1, 1916. Henry’s son, Walter, and his wife, Clara, later purchased the farm on Sept. 6, 1947. It was later purchased by their son, LaVerne, and his wife, Shirley, on Nov. 9, 1972, with the final ownership being filed on May 2, 1980.

Article Image Alt Text

The process began several weeks ago to make room for construction on the new Nebraska Center for Advanced Professional Studies addition at Sandy Creek Public Schools. The NCAPS facility will represent two stories and 42,000 square feet of renovated and new space, and carries a cost of $10,000,000. The facility is funded through the use of the South Central Unified District’s special building fund and is expected to open October of 2018. Benefiting all students enrolled in the program from Sandy Creek and Lawrence-Nelson, the program allows students to earn 12 or more college credits during their junior and senior year of high school, which are paid for by the school district.

Post #61 runs record to 13-4, prepares for post-season district tournament action beginnings July 7

A strong two game sweep of the Hastings Runza Junior Legion baseball team set the Sutton Juniors up with a strong finish, as the 13-4 Post 61 crew preps for the upcoming Area-5 District tournament slated for July 7-11, at DLD Park in Sutton.

The sweep would see Sutton come-from-behind in the twin bill, led June 27, at DLD Park, with Sutton erasing deficits of 3-0 and 5-2, to claim a 6-5 win in the opening game, behind a four-run fifth inning. In game two, Sutton held a 3-1 lead after two innings, then fell behind 5-3 after Hastings scored three runs in the top of the third and one more in the top of the fourth to gain the two run lead. Sutton’s offense came to life in the bottom of the fourth inning to score four runs and take a 7-5 lead, before both teams scored one run each in the fifth frame to set the final score at 8-6, Sutton.

Capturing moments through the lens

By Tory Duncan

I have always enjoyed the means of capturing life’s moments with a camera. Sometimes I get just that moment, other times, especially in the case of sports or action photography, a millisecond can make or break a photo.

I guess it is safe to say that photography is both a hobby and a career of sorts for me.

With the upcoming Clay County Fair this week, as well as the Area-5 Junior Legion District baseball tournament, there will be many moments presented to me to hopefully capture that moment to share with our readers.

Over the past several weeks, one of the leading photographers in the world has been capturing moments in the life of a family with many local ties. Bill Frakes, a Pulitzer Prize winning photographer, caught on to a once in a lifetime story about Lucille Kester, the mother of Sutton educator Jennifer Johnson, and grandmother to Rachel Roemmich.
