Wheel-a-thon takes Rollins from Hastings to York

Article Image Alt Text

For anyone who’s ever been diagnosed with a body-crippling disease, the road is never- ending and constantly poses new challenges.

Setting course on an 80-mile journey—Hastings to Sutton, Sutton to Henderson, and Henderson to York—Dave Rollins, 52, took on the ultimate challenge to raise money for Relay For Life and the Make a Wish Foundation, pushing a wheelchair along the way.

“Normally I wouldn’t do something like this, but my dad passed away because of cancer; it’s a good tribute to him,” Rollins said. His dad, Frank, passed away on Dec. 20, 2016.

His reasoning behind pushing a wheelchair stems back to his younger years when he was diagnosed with Perthes, a disease that affects the head of the femur, which involves the blood supply to the growth plate of the bone to become inadequate, resulting in the bone softening and breaking down.

Sutton Council deals with light agenda

Article Image Alt Text

Members of the Sutton City Council convened for a quick monthly meeting Monday, June 12, with the Sutton governing board sitting in session for just under 30 minutes.

Following the approval of the monthly consent agenda, council members approved a donation of $2,750 to the Sutton fireworks fund in an effort to help the Sutton Fire Department fund the annual fireworks display, held annually at Fox Hollow Golf Course.

Alan Quail, representing the Sutton Fire Department, shared that the rising costs of shells and displays may reduce the length of this year’s display, held on Tuesday, July 4.

Sutton juniors slide past Overton, SOS

Post #61 Juniors improve to 7-1, win gutsy wins at DLD Park Sunday afternoon

Sunday afternoon brought on a double header of sorts for the Sutton Post 61 Juniors, as the locals hosted both Overton and Stromsburg- Osceola-Shelby (SOS) at DLD Park.

The opener of the day nearly brought on Sutton’s second loss of the year as the Overton Bandits, behind a ninerun second inning, nearly pulled off the upset. A steady come-back attempt by Sutton produced a seven run sixth inning, to lift Sutton to a 15-14 win, while in game two, Sutton used a four-run sixth inning to steal a 6-4 win from the visiting SOS Juniors, as Post 61 improved to 7-1 on the year.

Sandhills retreat is always welcome

By Tory Duncan

Nebraska’s Sandhills region has always been an ultimate favorite of mine since I was a youngster, so many years ago that I refuse to count.

This past week I had the luxury of “getting lost” in the hills for a few days.

In all, during my four day tour of Western Nebraska, I passed through some 50 towns of all sizes, from Mason City, Berwyn, Dunning to Mullen. From Hyannis to Arthur, Keystone to Roscoe and Ogallala. From Paxton to Sutherland and Wallace, along with Hayes Center to Culbertson, McCook and Indianola, Atlanta and Funk, you name it. My almost 1,000-mile trip over the last four days of the week, was truly a getway, along the untraveled roads of the Nebraska Sandhills and Southwest Nebraska.

Letting the paint wars commence

By Ashley Swanson

Have you ever had a paint war? If you haven’t, then it’s probably something you should add to the list of awesome things to do in your lifetime. If you have, then you already know about the awesomeness I’m talking about.

A paint war is exactly how it sounds—you have a war, but with paint. Jenna had never experienced a paint war, so we traveled the whole six blocks to DG and picked up 12 tiny things of paint. We had every color from red to purple, and sparkly blue and green.

Paint can be difficult to pick up, so you have to choose a good designated war zone. We chose out in the country on a gravel road, which didn’t affect any lawn, plant or crop...or sidewalk, for that matter.
