Sutton resident Naomi Griess, 96, passed away Sunday, Dec. 28, 2025, at the Henderson Health Care Hospital in Henderson.

Funeral services took place at 10:30 a.m., Friday, Jan. 2, 2026, at the Emmanuel Reformed Church in Sutton, with Pastor Carl Gobelman officiating. Interment followed at the Sutton Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be directed to the family to be designated later.

Condolences may be left at www.suttonmemorial.com. Naomi was born at home in rural Sutton Sept. 19, 1929, to Hilmar and Hilda (Griess) Nuss, the second of 11 children. Naomi attended Country School District 8 through eighth grade. She married Evon Carl Griess Aug. 31, 1950, and enjoyed 67 years of marriage until Evon’s death in January 2018. To this union, three children were born: Eugene, Josephine, and Charlene. At age 13, Naomi began working as a caregiver of infant babies for families and couples in the community. During Evon’s time in the service, she worked as a waitress. After returning from service, she was a farm wife and homemaker for their family on their farm north of Sutton. They moved from the farm to Sutton in 1980.

Naomi managed the Sutton American Legion, cleaned at the Nolde Center and Bottorf & Maser Law Office, and was employed at the Sutton Bakery. She faithfully attended her church and Bible studies. In her later years, she cared for her husband until his death. She moved to the Assisted Living in Sutton in 2022. Her love and joy was spending time with her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Naomi was a faithful member of Emmanuel Reformed Church and she belonged to the Sutton American Legion Auxiliary.

Naomi is survived by her son, Eugene Griess of Sutton, his children and grandchildren, Luke (Sara) Griess of Aurora, Jackston, Nash, Kellar, and Lynlee; Erica (Emmett) Lyons of Central City, Oaklyn and Austen, and Lance Griess of Aurora; daughter, Josephine (Jim) Weldon of Lawrence, her children and grandchildren, Abigail (Tony) Lauters of Hastings, Jude, Haven, Quinn, and Mavarick, Claire (Justin) Klooz of Newton, KS and Baer, and Benjamin (Julia) Weldon of Hastings, Chloe, Barrett, and Heidi; daughter, Charlene (Mark) Overturf of Sutton, her children and grandchildren, Wade (Callie) Overturf of Wisner and Wren; Wyat (Maria) Overturf of Sutton, Wylie and Hadley.

She is survived by her brothers, Silas Nuss, Armin (Inez) Nuss; sisters, Miriam (Garry) Sinnen all of Sutton, and Donna Mae Nuss of Hastings; brothers-in-law, Charlie Hembree of Plano, TX, and Wally Nuss of Sutton; and sisters-in-law, Ruth Griess and Sinobia Griess of Sutton, and many nieces, nephews and good friends.

Preceding Naomi in death were her husband, parents, brothers, Gideon, Don, and Tom; sisters, Ruth, Elizabeth and Marie.
