Michael R. Johnson was born Jan. 29, 1946, in York to Sheldon and Mary (Barbur) Johnson. He passed away Jan. 30, 2026, at CHI St. Elizabeth Hospital in Lincoln at the age of 80 years and one day.
Mike was an only child and was raised on the family farm northwest of Geneva. He attended country school, District 81, from second through eighth grade and was active in 4-H, where he showed livestock. He attended the Congregational Church and was confirmed in 1956.
As a child, Mike treasured time spent with his Grandpa Jim Barbur, fishing at the Boys Pond and helping at Barbur Floral. Fond memories included pounding nails into benches and planting seeds in anticipation of the coming spring.
Mike attended Geneva High School, where he was involved in drama and speech activities. These experiences helped shape him into a natural leader, and he served as President of the Class of 1964. During his senior year, he was crowned King of 4-H and was also a winner at the Nebraska American Legion State Speech Contest.
Following high school, Mike attended Doane College in Crete, and later transferred to the University of Nebraska–Lincoln, where he majored in agriculture. He ultimately decided to return home to Geneva to farm with his father.
In 1975, Mike married the love of his life, Virginia Allgood. Together they raised three sons. In addition to farming, Mike worked during the winters in carpentry, cable installation, and measuring fields for the ASCS Office in Geneva.
After farming with his dad until 1983, Mike discovered a passion for crop insurance adjusting and became an auditor for AM AG. This opportunity required the family to move to Missouri Valley, IA in 1989. While there, Mike quickly rose through the ranks and became National Claims Manager for AM AG. In 2000, he received the AM AG National President’s Award.
Following the sale of AM AG, Mike entered the banking business, which brought the family back to Sutton in 2004. He worked at City State Bank, later known as Cornerstone Bank.
Mike later became an independent insurance agent and especially enjoyed working with local farmers on their crop insurance needs. Much of his success came from the strong relationships he built with his customers. After opening Eagle Pointe Insurance in Sutton, his blue shirts, suspenders, rolled-up jeans, and flat hat became his signature look. Mike sold Eagle Pointe Insurance in 2024 but continued to support the office until his official retirement in January 2026.
Mike found great joy in being involved in his community. He was active in several local organizations, including the Sutton Lions Club, the Masons, the Shrine, and the Hillbilly group associated with the Shrine. He served as President of the Sutton Chamber and participated on numerous church boards and committees. While Mike didn’t have many traditional hobbies, he enjoyed searching and purchasing things online—often buying in bulk “just in case.” Above all, his greatest passion was helping those connected to his insurance work.
Mike loved holidays, family trips, and any opportunity for the whole family to be together. Special memories included Disney Cruises, a Royal Caribbean cruise, and family vacations to Branson, MO. Another thing he enjoyed was spending time having coffee with friends at the Geneva Senior Center.
Mike is survived by his wife of 50 years, Virginia Johnson of Geneva; his sons and their families: Cory (Laura) Johnson and his children from a previous marriage, Taylor, Mason, and Clayton of Omaha, Scott (Stephanie) Johnson and their children, Ellie and Simon of Minneapolis, MN, and Adam (Melanie) Johnson and their children, Amelia and Fletcher of Lincoln. He is also survived by his brother-in-law, Steve Allgood of Geneva; sister-in-law, Vicki Allgood of Lincoln; nephews, Eric (Angie) Allgood and their children, Jackson and Jacy of Henderson, and Aaron (Amy) Allgood of Albion; as well as aunts, uncles, cousins, and a host of friends.
Mike was preceded in death by his parents, Sheldon and Mary Johnson; grandparents, Albert and Cecil Johnson and Jim and Louise Barbur; in-laws, Charlie and Dorothy Allgood; and brother-in-law, Stan Allgood.
In lieu of flowers, the Johnson Family will be using memorials to support the Fillmore Central Public Schools Foundation designated for the new auditorium; and the Geneva Rescue.
