Maxiene (Mau) Linder

Maxiene (Mau) Linder passed away peacefully on April 5, 2024, at Heritage Care Center in Fairbury at the age of 99 years and 5 months. She was born on November 1, 1924, on the family farm east of Sutton. She attended country school till the age of 12 before going to town for high school, graduating in 1941, with perfect attendance. While attending high school she met Arnold Linder and the two were married June 12, 1943. They moved to many places, returning to Sutton to farm. In 1957, Maxiene’s brother Morris suddenly lost his wife, and Maxiene was asked to help raise his four children, Dave, Terry, Deborah, and Randy. In 1962, the family moved to a farm east of Alexandria. After the kids were grown and left home, Maxiene and Arnie moved into the town of Alexandria.

Former Deweese resident, James “Jim” Nejezchleb, 95, passed away Friday, April 5, 2024, at Central Nebraska Veteran’s Home in Kearney.

A Rosary service was at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 9, at Our Lady of Assumption Catholic Church. Memorial Mass was 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 10, at Our Lady of Assumption catholic Church in Deweese, with Father Loras Grell officiating. Burial with military rites was at St. Martin’s Cemetery near Deweese. Memorials may be given to the family for a memorial to be established at a later date. Clay Center resident Kathleen “Kay” Rose Springer, 95, passed away Saturday, March 16, 2024, at the Providence Place of Hastings, surrounded by her loving family.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, March 21, 2024, at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel (New Building, 204 W. Johnson Street) in Clay Center, with Pastor Kathy Uldrich officiating. Interment will follow at the Clay Center Cemetery in Clay Center. Memorial contributions may be directed to the donor’s choice or to the family to be designated later. Kay was born on Jan. 7, 1929, in Rural Kearney County to Raymond and Elsie (Schluntz) Schubert. Kay was a caring, generous, and God-fearing individual who cherished her family above all else.

Erma Simmons, age 79 of Sutton, died Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2024, at Sutton. She was born on October 16, 1944, to Charles and Inza (Bartlett) Searle in Harvard. On June 13, 1965, Erma was united in marriage to Arthur Simmons in Sutton.

Erma was a member of the Federated Church in Sutton. She loved gardening and playing cards, but most of all enjoyed spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband, Art, of Sutton, children: Andrew (Karrie) Simmons of Marquette, NE, Arlene (John) Fairbanks of South Hutchinson, KS, and Ardell Simmons of Sutton; grandchildren: Jacob (Ruth) Simmons of Marquette, Emily Simmons of Yakima, WA, Sarah (Breaden) Corman of Larned, KS, Nathan Fairbanks of Prescott, AZ, and Jessica (Tanner) Dice of Omaha, NE. Erma is also survived by her sister Vera Smith of Hastings; and nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, and a sister.

Ray D. Nuss, 75, of Lincoln passed away on Jan. 31, 2024.

Ray was born during the blizzard of 1948 at home in Saronville to Curtis and Wilma Nuss. He graduated from Sutton High School in 1967 and went on to the University of Nebraska. Ray graduated with a BS in Chemistry. He began his career at Brunswick in Lincoln and then went on to be a salesperson for various companies up and down the East Coast. He spent most of his adult life in Rockaway, NJ; traveling back and forth throughout the years back to Nebraska to visit. He would always connect with friends and family if his travels took him close. When he retired he moved back to Lincoln. Ray always had several home improvement projects going wherever he lived and has helped a lot of other people with their projects as well. He was always willing to help others.
