Husker Harvest Days is set to get underway near Grand Island next week, running Sept. 13-15, just west of Grand Island, along Husker Highway. Exhibits to Focus on Climate, ‘Weather Ready Farms’

Agricultural producers and Nebraskans attending Husker Harvest Days near Grand Island Sept. 13-15 will learn ways to maintain profitability while addressing challenges from the state’s climate at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln’s Institute of Agriculture and Natural Resources exhibit. “Our faculty and staff have a wealth of research and information to share with Nebraskans on being prepared to manage their operations during significant variations in weather and climate,” said Ron Yoder, IANR vice chancellor. “For the first time in recent years, we are taking a second year to build upon our previous year’s exhibit theme that focused on successfully weathering extremes.

JENNY’S REESOURCES

Last Irrigation: With many area cornfields in beginning dent and starch fill, I should have written about last irrigation last week. You may be wondering how to schedule the last irrigation. For those of you with watermark sensors or soil moisture sensors, the goal is to use them to determine when the soil profile reaches 60 percent depletion (for silty-clay soils in our area, aim for an average of 160 kpa of all your watermark sensors).

Crop Update: Much of the corn in a several county area is in the dough to early dent stage. The heat has really pushed this crop along and greatly impacted our non-irrigated crops. Our Hybrid Maize model simulations also show a 10 percent and greater potential of reduced non-irrigated yields compared to the 30-year average for the Clay Center area south in the state.
