JENNY’S REESources

by Jenny Rees

One of my favorite series of meetings each winter are the Nebraska On-Farm Research updates which will be held next week February 8, 9, 11, and 12th at North Platte, Grand Island, Norfolk, and ARDC near Mead respectively. I enjoy them because of the discussion, ideas, and because your farmer-peers share their research-why they did the studies they did and what they learned. There are numerous meetings right now and through meetings, farm magazines, social media, and the internet, you’re learning about various products and production practices.

JENNY’S REESources

by Jenny Rees

Master Gardeners: Over the past few years, we’ve received inquiries from our area regarding the Master Gardener program from UNL. The Nebraska Master Gardener program extends the outreach of UNL by  providing volunteers with research-based horticulture education, which prepares them to share their knowledge with citizens of the state.

THE CORN-SHUCKING BEAR

Article Image Alt Text

On Jan. 12, 1884, the North Loup Herald ran a story headlined, “Bearly Possible,” in which editor N. H. Parks reported a visit to a local farmer who had a black bear that had been taught to shuck corn. While the story’s conclusion suggests that Parks had crafted a tall tale, keeping a country newspaper going was often a daunting challenge. Journalists can be forgiven for thinking up ways to enliven their papers’ otherwise generally bland fare of local news and patent insides. Offbeat stories were sometimes picked up by other state papers, providing an extra measure of publicity for the originating sheet. In this case, the Nebraska State Journal reprinted the bear story in its Jan. 17 issue.
