Our competition teams at the Nebraska College of Technical Agriculture are starting their winter and spring travel season. This means they put in many hours of hard work on campus, in addition to offcampus team workouts and miles on the road.

Master Gardeners: Over the past few years, we’ve received inquiries from our area regarding the Master Gardener program from UNL. The Nebraska Master Gardener program extends the outreach of UNL by  providing volunteers with research-based horticulture education, which prepares them to share their knowledge with citizens of the state.

Clay Center, NE – Pheasants Forever, along with the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, the Natural Resources Conservation Service and the Farm Service Agency, will be hosting a Conservation Reserve Program (CRP) informational meeting in Clay Center. This general CRP sign-up began on Dec. 1, 2015 and will continue through Feb. 26, 2016.

Producers in south central and southeastern Nebraska have until Jan. 15, to apply for funding to help improve grasslands for grazing and wildlife. A partnership has been formed among the Nebraska Game and Parks Commission, the U.S. Department of Agriculture Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS), Pheasants Forever, Audubon Nebraska and other entities, through the Regional Conservation Partnership Program (RCPP). The Grassland Bird Initiative will provide RCPP funding to 15 counties.

On Jan. 12, 1884, the North Loup Herald ran a story headlined, “Bearly Possible,” in which editor N. H. Parks reported a visit to a local farmer who had a black bear that had been taught to shuck corn. While the story’s conclusion suggests that Parks had crafted a tall tale, keeping a country newspaper going was often a daunting challenge. Journalists can be forgiven for thinking up ways to enliven their papers’ otherwise generally bland fare of local news and patent insides. Offbeat stories were sometimes picked up by other state papers, providing an extra measure of publicity for the originating sheet. In this case, the Nebraska State Journal reprinted the bear story in its Jan. 17 issue.
