Bernard Jackson

Clay Center resident Bernard Jackson, 77, passed away Monday, Feb. 17, 2020, at Bryan Medical Center West Campus in Lincoln.

Private services will be conducted at McLaughlin Funeral Chapel in Clay Center. Private Inurnment will follow at the Clay Center Cemetery. In honoring his wish to be cremated there will not be visitation or viewing.

Memorial contributions may be directed to the family to be designated later.

Bernard was born April 5, 1942, in Fairfield, NE to George and Sophie (Deluge) Jackson. He received his education in Clay Center. Bernard was employed at the M.A.R.C. for 38 years. On Dec. 23, 1961, he married Diane Jackson until her passing in 2009. Diane and Bernard were blessed with two sons, Brian and Darren.

Marguerite J. “Peg” Kinsman

Marguerite J. “Peg” Kinsman was born July 26, 1927, on a farm near Gothenburg to Harvard Russell and Ethel Beatrice (Rainwater) Crawford, the fourth of six children. Peg passed away Wednesday, Feb. 12, 2020, at Central City Care Center at the age of 92. Peg’s mother Ethel died when she was four years old and her father later married Violet Ostrum, who became a loving mother to the six children and later two sons joined the family. Peg attended grade school in Gothenburg and several high schools while living in California and Washington, returning to Nebraska and graduating from Beaver City High School with the class of 1945.

Following high school, Peg was a telephone operator in Beaver City for five years. On May 18, 1951, she was united in marriage to F. Glenn Kinsman and moved to Friend.

Sutton, NE resident Kathleen “Kay” (Freese) Wach, Batt, 86, passed away Friday, Feb. 14, 2020, at Bryan Medical Center East Campus in Lincoln.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10:30 a.m., Thursday, Feb. 20, 2020, at the Federated Church in Sutton, with Rev. Mary Scott officiating. Interment will follow at the Sutton Cemetery. Visitation was held Wed, from 1 p.m.–8 p.m., with the family present from 7 p.m.–8 p.m., at Sutton Memorial Chapel in Sutton.

Dennis LaVerne Ross

Dennis Ross, age 69, of Lincoln, passed away Thursday, Feb. 13, 2020, at his home after a long battle with MS.

Funeral Services were at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Feb. 18, at the Southern Heights Presbyterian Church, 5750 South 40th, Lincoln. Rev. Leanne Masters officiated. Interment was at 2:30 p.m., Tuesday, at the Aurora Cemetery in Aurora. Visitation was from 5–7 p.m., Monday, and 9–10 a.m., Tuesday, at Southern Heights Presbyterian Church in Lincoln. Memorials may be made to Children’s Hospital/Rehab Department, Omaha. Condolences may be e-mailed to the family through the mortuary website at www. higbymortuary.com.

Dennis LaVerne Ross, the son of Floyd H. and Verna M. (Cady) Ross, was born in Hastings on July 13, 1950, and passed away in Lincoln, on Feb. 13, 2020, at the age of 69.

Susan Elizabeth Ewing Haley

Susan Elizabeth Ewing Haley passed away peacefully in her home in Livermore, CA, on Jan. 24, 2020, surrounded by family. She was 62.

Susan was born to Mary Lou (Haseloh) and Earl Ewing in Hastings on Jan. 13, 1958. She grew up in Harvard with siblings Jane, Anne and Carl. She graduated in 1976 from Harvard High School.

Susan graduated from Nebraska Wesleyan University with a degree in music in 1980. She continued her education, receiving a dual master’s degree in library science and colonial history at the University of Maryland.

Susan married Robert Haley on Aug. 22, 1992. She worked as a supervisory museum curator for the National Park Service Archives and Records Center at Golden Gate National Recreation Area in San Francisco until her death.

She was an active member of the Little Brown Church of Sunol.

Floydean “Dean” Hawley

Floydean “Dean” Hawley

Floydean “Dean” Hawley, the daughter of Floyd and Minnie Pugh Higgins was born March 27, 1921, in Nemaha County near Auburn. She departed this life on Sat., Feb. 8, 2020, at her home in Edgar, at the age of 98 years.

Dean was united in marriage to Leland L. Hawley on Nov. 21, 1939, at Hiawatha, KS. Together with her husband Leland, the couple had a cattle and farming operation in Clay County. Dean was a long time member of the Church of the Plains in Edgar.

Dean had been a Girl Scout leader for many years, she enjoyed playing cards. Dean also enjoyed writing her own poetry. She and Leland traveled quite a bit and took cruises. Dean was the No. 1 Husker fan of all time. She and Leland traveled to all Husker games, home and away for many years. Dean was very close to all her nieces and nephews, many of them looked to Dean as a second mother.

Lorene Anna Schmer

Lorene Anna Schmer was born to William and Anna (Lauenstein) Baumann, in Sutton, and passed away Feb. 1, 2020, at Westfield Quality Care in Aurora, at the age of 98 years and 28 days. She was one of six children in the family.

Lorene attended Sutton Public School and graduated with the class of 1939. She married Jarold Schmer on Aug. 28, 1940. Two children were born to this union: Ronald and Steven. The family lived and farmed south of Sutton, and Lorene was a homemaker.

After Jarold’s retirement, they moved into Sutton. Due to the onset of dementia, Lorene moved to Hillcrest View Assisted Living in 2011. As dementia progressed, she later moved to Westfield Quality Care in Aurora.

Lorene was a member of the Federated Church in Sutton, actively serving with the women’s fellowship group for many years.

On April 8, 1968, he married Nancy Graham in Honolulu, HI. He was the owner of Hunts’ Laundromatics in Honolulu, HI.

Service will be Monday, Feb. 3, 2020, 10:30 a.m., at St. Paul Lutheran Church, Blue Hill, with Pastor Leah Krotz officiating. Burial will be in the Blue Hill Cemetery, Blue Hill. Visitation will be Sunday, Feb. 2, 2020, from 1-8 p.m. with family present from 3-5 p.m. at Merten-Butler Mortuary, and one hour prior to services at the church.
