Texas Trio Takes Part in Run For a Resident in Sutton

Runners from several areas of Clay County swarmed the front lawn of the Sutton Community Home for the third annual Run For a Resident, sponsored by the Sutton home. Unique visitors, however, to the annual event, proved to be three ladies from Texas, who since 2010, have been trekking across the United States running in 5K events.

Clark Earns Silver in Class C Shot Put

Sutton’s Garrett Clark went out in style Friday during the 2016 Nebraska State Track and Field Championships held May 20-21, at Omaha Burke. Steadily increasing his school record performances throughout his senior season, Clark’s C-5 District winning throw of 54’ 5.25,” a school record at the time, would once again go by the wayside, as Clark hit the 56’ 2” mark in Omaha.

Svoboda Shatters Discus Record

All records are meant to be broken, says the old saying. In the case of the Sandy Creek boys discus record, it took 42 years to refresh the record board for the Cougars, but finally, senior Brook Svoboda was able to put his name in the record books with a huge win in the Class C-5 District track and field championships held May 12 in Geneva. Jim Squires held the Sandy Creek record since 1974, when his mark of 159’ 6” was set.

Lady Cards to State in Five Events

The Harvard girls track team will be headed to the 2016 Nebraska State High School Track and Field Championships in Omaha this weekend in five events. The waiting game, however, affected the Lady Cardinals in a big way, as the highly competitive D-4 District meet held at Sandy Creek May 11, would cause a few nervous moments for Harvard in the 3,200 meter relay, 3,200 meter run, 400 meter dash and 300 meter low hurdles.

Mustangs Third at C-5, Send Five to State

Heading into the Class C-5 District track and field championships, the Sutton Mustangs had their eyes set on challenging a strong field of teams in the meet held at Fillmore Central High School in Geneva, May 12. The Mustangs battled strong and produced five state qualifying performances, led by a big day in the throws for senior Garrett Clark.

Shafer, Svoboda Lead SC Girls

Jalyn Shafer earned the lone gold medal of the day, in action at the Sutton Invite, May 5, while Sadie Svoboda earned a pair of medals in the 100 meter dash and the 100 meter hurdles to lead the Sandy Creek girls track team in Sutton. Heartland held a 120-110 scoring edge over second place Superior in the final team standings, while Sutton’s 83 team points landed the Fillies in the third place spot.

Mustangs Own Home Meet

The Sutton boys track team scored early and often to run away with the 2016 Sutton Invitational, May 5. The Mustangs tallied 39 points in the field events to kick off the day and then posted 136 more points on the track, as the Mustangs outscored second place Milford by 69 points, 175-106.

Sutton Wins SNC Golf Title

Just two days following the Milford Eagles 10-stroke win over the Sutton Mustang golf team, in action at the Sutton Invitational held May 3, the Mustangs returned the favor on May 5, as teams from the Southern Nebraska Conference gathered in Hebron for the 2016 Southern Nebraska Conference Golf Championships. Behind the strength of three medalists in the final top 10, Sutton edged out a very challenging field that would see the Mustangs hold a 336-338 stroke advantage over the Eagles, while the third place David City Scouts finished with a 340 in the competitive field of teams.

SC Girls Score in Three Events

A tough go at the Southern Nebraska Conference track meet held in Henderson, Monday, May 2, would see the Sandy Creek girls track team total 12 points, earning a pair of individual medals and a relay medal in the process. Wilber-Clatonia ran past Tri County for the team title, outscoring the Lady Trojans 110.5-79.
