Six earn conference honors for Sutton Trap Team Saturday

Hunter Wiseman would be the lone weekly award winner for the Sutton Trap team, but Wiseman would join five other Sutton shooters to earn all-conference honors in the Central Nebraska Trapshooting Conference, as the weekly shooting season at the Crooked Creek Trap Club came to a close Saturday, April 27.

Wiseman would tie with Crooked Creek Trap Team member Colten Sorgenfrei as the top male 16-yard shoots on a brutally cold and windy day of shooting near Stockham.

Okraska brothers help lead Harvard boys to 4th at TVC meet

A total of 12 medals would be earned by the Harvard boys track team during action in the Twin Valley Conference track and field meet Saturday, April 27 at Sandy Creek.

Of the 11 medals earned by the Cardinals, the brother duo of Noah and Ben Okraska would own six individual medals and have a hand in one relay medal, helping the Cardinals produce 59 team points for a fourth-place finish.

Shelton held off second place Kenesaw for the TVC team crown, as the Bulldogs outscored the Blue Devils 147-124, with Blue Hill finishin third with 90 points.

Baumert leads Sutton at SNC

Kyle Baumert continued his winning ways on the track Monday afternoon as the Sutton senior earned a pair of individual gold medals and helped the Sutton 400-meter relay team to a silver medal, as Sutton battled in the always tough Southern Nebraska Conference meet, placing fourth as a team with 64 points.

The weather-plagued meet, held at Milford High School, would see the Wolverines of Wilber-Clatonia claim team gold with 104.33 points, while Centennial placed second with 93 points, while Thayer Central tallied 80 points to finish ahead of the Mustangs.

Baumert’s will gained the senior gold in both the 110-meter high hurdles and the 200-meter dash, as Baumert edged out second place Mason Zimmerman of W-C in the hurdles by 2.5-tenths of a second with a winning time of 15.09 seconds. Zimmerman finished in 15.34 seconds.

Sandy Creek girls put up 57 points at Superior, place 5th

In yet another strong day for the Sandy Creek girls track team, the Cougars racked up 57 total points to place fifth as a team at the Superior Invitational April 16.

Hastings St. Cecilia rolled up 124 points to beat second place Thayer Central by 21 points for the girls team title.

A crew of freshmen for the Cougars continued their strong performances at Superior, as Leah Hatch and Jenna Heinz combined for 46 of Sandy Creek’s team points.

Conference track meets are slated for this Saturday

This Saturday, April 27, marks the point of the track and field season in which area teams will begin their trek to the post-season district meets, as all three Clay County Schools enter into their respective conference track and field meets.

SNC MEET

Sutton and Sandy Creek will both head to Milford this Saturday for action in the Southern Nebraska Conference meet. Field events will kick off the meet, beginning at 10 a.m.

The first round of field events will include: Girls shot put, girls high jump, girls and boys long jump, boys discus and boys pole vault.

Vance Smith, the Sutton Juniors top shooter last Saturday, along with Stevie Wiseman stand in line to take their shots at targets during Saturday’s conference shoot at Crooked Creek. Smith led the Sutton squad, hitting on 46 of 50 shots and was runner-up overall in the junior male division.

Mother Nature finally provided shooters at the Crooked Creek Gun Club to shoot in warm and dry conditions. For the Sutton trap team, the weather proved to aid in a strong outing as the team heads into their final week of conference shooting this coming weekend.

A total of seven seniors hit on 80 or more targets during the April 20 shoot, with Colby Peterson and Andrew Wochner leading the way for Sutton.

Peterson was 91-100 overall, hitting on 46 of 50 targets from the 16-yard mark and 45 of 50 from his 23-yard handicap mark.

Sutton takes Heartland title

Strong efforts by the Sutton Mustangs on the track, where a total of 14 medals would be earned, propelled the Mustangs to their second straight meet title, as the Mustangs outscored second place Hastings St. Cecilia 125-81 to win the Heartland Invite, one week after winning the Sandy Creek meet.

All three relays for Sutton would earn gold, starting off with a dominating win in the 3,200-meter relay, finishing the event in 9:09.27. Team members included Wyatt Bergen, Quenton Jones, Nate Andres and Colton Haight.

To end the day, both the 400 and 1,600-meter relay teams cashed in for gold. The 400 meter relay, made up by James Griess, Kyle Baumert, Maury Bautista and Jacob Rogers, earned gold by nearly one full second, with a winning time of 46.4 seconds. Second place St. Cecilia finished in a time of 47.2 seconds.

Sandy Creek girls chart seven medals at Heartland Invite

Freshman Caitlin Rempe earned first place honors in the triple jump and was the silver medalist in the long jump April 9, in action at the Heartland Invite in Henderson.

Another strong performance, both on and off the track, would gain the Sandy Creek girls a sixthplace team finish with 53 total points, as the Cougars gained seven medals on the day, four of which came on the track and another three in field events.

Hastings St. Cecilia outscored second place Sutton by 47 points, 116-69, with the Cougars trailing the Fillies by just 16 points.

Freshman Leah Hatch accounted for 18 individual points, winning the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.17 seconds, while in the 200, Hatch placed second with a time of 28.17 seconds. Event winner Jenna Esch of St. Cecilia finished in a winning time of 27.58 seconds.

Hatch aided the Cougars’ 400-meter relay team in placing third in the event with a time of 54.59 seconds. St. Cecilia and Blue Hill finished ahead of the Cougars, as the Hawkettes gained gold in 54.16 seconds, while Blue Hill edged Sandy Creek with a time of 54.28 seconds.

Davis signs with Midland basketball

Sutton senior Jordan Davis signed a letter of intent on Wednesday, April 3, to play basketball with Midland University in Fremont. Pictured, in front, is his mother Stephanie Davis, Davis is pictured in the center, while his father, Derrick, is at the left. In the back is Matthew Davis and Sutton’s head basketball coach Jon Ladehoff.

Sutton annual alumni tourney’s set for May 3-4

Sutton’s annual men’s basketball and women’s volleyball tournaments are slated to be played May 3-4, at Sutton Public Schools and in the Sutton Community Center.

Action will begin Friday, May 3 with basketball and volleyball being played at the school and additional vollyeball at the community center that evening.

All tournament action for both will be played at SPS on Saturday, May 4..

Both tournaments will guarantee at least three games or matches per team.
